TBF American remakes of UK sitcoms usually flop pretty hard.
Either that or they go on to become very popular there doesn’t seem to be a in between (they do okay but nothing big)

I imagine that the US version would’ve been a flop if he wasn’t Michael Scott so they weren’t exactly wrong. He brought so much to that role and the show overall. Basically all hinged on him being able to pull off that cringey but still loveable schtick

I understand the advice on paper pitching the office dosnt sound great

Paul Rudd is also the only of the four core from Anchorman that doesn’t appear in The Office.

American remake of Office is not a sure thing at that time. Greg Daniels was unproven at the time as well.
And it was true, the first season was rough. Glad that it found its footing in the second season.

Steve to Paul … probably

What I really want to know. Is the Ricky Gervais and Steve Carell beef real or not?
Because that shit is absolutely hilarious. Ricky just taking pot shots all the time and Steve selling those stone cold killer eyes. Either they’re in on it, and it’s beautiful. Or they hate each other, and it’s fucking hilarious.
That first season was rough. UK office culture didn’t translate well to the US. In the UK it’s very, very hard to fire someone. Michael had to be retooled to have been a good salesman as a reason for him to still have a job.

I love hearing stories like this. Sometimes in life you just have to follow your instincts and ignore what everyone else is telling you

Tbf it wasn’t bad advice. The show shouldn’t have worked, but it did once they made the necessary adjustments between season 1 and season 2. British comedy usually lacks the warmth American network sitcoms need. Parks and Rec had the same issue. The problem is that nowadays, execs don’t have vision and a show that’s not working right out of the gate gets axed.

I am so glad he didn’t listen. I wonder how many opportunities Paul Rudd lost with his decisions btw 😫

It’s so easy to say ‘don’t do it’ for an unusual show you don’t really understand or isn’t like a conventional sit com

I mean Rudd wasn’t wrong.
Thankfully the show pivot from being a remake by Season 2

I am so glad he didn’t listen. Can’t imagine anyone else as Michael Scott.
Paul Rudd is so nice, but I’m glad Steve Carell didn’t take his advice.
If he didn’t Bob Odenkirk does the office and someone else is Saul Goodman.Â
Didn’t we already know this years ago?
[Yeah, apparently he wrote about it in his book 5 years ago.](https://www.esquire.com/entertainment/tv/a38252659/bob-odenkirk-almost-played-michael-scott-the-office-steve-carell/)
