That is a huge crack in the armor. If courts start treating addictive design like a real harm, these platforms will have to change the product, not just the PR.

these companies have spent decades making us addicted to their products and shit, knowing damn well what it’s creating

KGM’s legal team showed the jury internal documents from Meta in which Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg and other executives described its efforts to attract and keep kids and teens on its platforms. One document said: “If we wanna win big with teens, we must bring them in as tweens,” and another internal memo showed that 11-year-olds were four times as likely to keep coming back to Instagram, compared to competing apps, despite the platform requiring users to be at least 13 years old.

Zuckerberg is the SCUM OF THE EARTH. FUCK THIS GUY

But what about the ads I see on TV from Facebook and TikTok telling me much they care about us? And how they protect minors on their platforms?? Surely they wouldn’t be lying?

Maybe Cook knew this was coming that’s why he came out with that “go outside” statement recently

Good, I’ve done so many papers on how addicting social media is in uni and I’m glad people are starting to become more aware of the harm especially for those that are more vulnerable or susceptible to social media addiction!

  7. Highly recommended “Careless People” by Sarah Wynn-Williams for an in-depth look inside some of the decision making at Meta that lead them to do things like *specifically* target teenage girls with eating disorders, etc. It’s a great, eye-opening and ultimately horrifying read.

Good. Hopefully this is the start of a larger movement. There are no better than the cigarette companies.

As they should be. Even big tech CEOs aren’t allowing their kids to get phones or just scroll on things like Tik Tok because why the hell would you? Attention spans have gotten so bad that there are many kids who can’t even finish story driven video games which is also technically screen time, but at least still controlled screen time that has an end. Its gotten so bad that many shooting games have gone the way of being extremely fast paced and looks like it would give you a headache. I got rid of Tik Tok around 5yrs ago and downloaded an app on my phone that makes the reels on Instagram not work and shorts on YouTube not work. Having that crammed into every app is ridiculous.

  10. You can literally have inpatient rehab for social media addictions. It’s designed to get you hooked and keep you hooked. It’s a horror show.

Wait I want to be entitled to a settlement, and same with any app that has an endless feed.

This might actually be helpful for everyone in the long run. The tech companies know damn well they’re trying to make their products as addictive as possible. It keeps them raking in all those sweet, sweet advertising profits for seemingly endless amounts. And it’s ruined so much mental health all over the world. Suing them might actually be the best way to make some regulations.
