Kerry Washington signed up for the PBS show Finding Your Roots in 2018 — and had no idea it would shatter everything she thought she knew about herself.
Washington had always felt a “weird disconnect” with her father — but she thought that was her fault. The truth turned out to be something else entirely.
When the show required DNA testing, her parents sat her down and revealed a secret they had kept for decades: her beloved dad was not her biological father. She had been conceived via sp**m donor in the 1970s — at a time when the procedure was considered experimental and was kept strictly secret.
Her mother had even planned to leave a note about it in a safe deposit box — Washington only found out because the DNA test forced their hand. Despite her best efforts, there remains no way to determine the donor’s identity.
