Lucas Grabeel says that part of the reason why there was no big ‘High School Musical’ 20th anniversary like ‘Hannah Montana’ is because part of the cast wants to distance themselves

I feel like if you make a reboot of the show you can’t also have an anniversary special. it kind of has to be one or the other.

I was happy with his, Corbin Bleu, and Monique Coleman’s parts in season 4 of High School Musical: The Musical: The Series. I unashamedly love that show.

If Oscar-nominee Kristen Stewart and Batman-ass Robert Pattinson are willing to come back for Twilight, you can come back for HSM sis.

Zac has literally never wanted to be in a High Schooler Musical reunion.
Him and Rachel McAdams in Mean Girls seem to hate their casts

These kinds of comments always come across as bitter and a bit entitled to me. Because you want to capitalize off your HSM fame forever, everyone else should too?
Itās great that you had fun and thereās nothing wrong with holding on to the memories, but at some point you have to do something else with your life and you canāt shame others who want to move on.

I think it’s fair enough lol. people can have a billion reasons why they don’t want to go back, whatever they may be. they don’t owe us a reunion or to participate in our nostalgia dreams. I certainly wouldn’t want to have to be in a room with my ex, who I dated for 6~ years, and my ex best friend, who, among many other things, was pitted against me constantly in a tabloid fuelled love triangle narrative with *my then boyfriend**
besides, vanessa and zefron are busy. and ashley is busy beefing hilary duff on social media
*not to imply that vanessa is the one who is ‘in the way’, just using her situation as an example

I hate the idea that itās āsadā people donāt want to revisit something from their past. I know fans always get offended when they think actors get too big for this stuff, but like who cares? You still have the musical?
Also, I watched the Hannah Montana anniversary special and hated it? It was so weirdly saccharine, clearly had a lot of missing figures, and never touched on the more interesting or complicated things Miley has said about being Hannah. Which is whatever, it doesnāt have to be anything complex. But watching it, while knowing Miley has been vocal about the backlash she received breaking away from being a child star or having body dysmorphia, made the whole thing feel phony.
Anyway, I just donāt understand the need to have a special to reminisce over this thing? The movie still exists? And I donāt blame people who are pushing 40 for not wanting to keep talking about something they did when they were teenagers.

Iām still obsessed with Zac even now in my 30s. however, imagine if all your coworkers from that one job you had when you were 17 never stopped talking about it for 20 yearsā¦Iād probably distance myself too

I honestly think actors have every right to choose to distance themselves from projects. It sounds harsh, but in all reality if your job from years ago asked you to come back, I think a lot of people would choose to move forward. I wouldn’t go back to many of my old jobs, neither would any of us really want to attend our school reunions.
Sufficient_Ask5717 on
Is it really that serious? Some people just take the role/job, do their best, do the work, and move on with their lives. I don’t think it’s necessary to have a reunion/reboot of every hit TV show/movie from the last 30 years. A lot of people generally don’t like to revisit the past too much, even the good parts, and I assume that actors and entertainers are the same way.

Itās a double edged sword . Iām gonna get real and say for him he would love a full on reunion because yes he may look at it fondly but ALSO he wouldnāt mind the bag / recognition he would get from getting the stars who are currently successful outside of the nostalgia to come join . The ones who hold on and do podcast and interview and guest appearances any chance they get compared to the stars who are in multiple hit projects is because this is their connection to fame and their livelihood. If he was was the star of several big budget movies coming out in the next few years Iām pretty sure he would be a little hesitant too.

Good for them for not doing it. Itād be hollow and weird like every reunion/anniversary special lol.
I have coworkers from 20 years ago that I had fun working with at the time, but you know, we moved on and arenāt slinging lattes to cranky people anymore so the thing that bonded us then doesnāt really exist anymore. *And thatās ok.*

I mean they already did the 10th anniversary thing and it was fine. Unless they were gonna do a reunion without at least one of the two stars it was never happening for the 20th. Zac has never wanted to be a part of any reunion (i don’t think theres anything wrong with that) and depending on when it would’ve been filmed Vanessa would’ve either been heavily pregnant or postpartum, so I doubt she would’ve wanted to. Also, i don’t think there are any problems between them, at least there hasnāt for a while since they only seem to say nice things about each other, but i doubt they will ever be in the same room again purposefully. Vanessa and Ashley also haven’t been close since maybe 2020(?).

Why are has-been actors so obsessed with riding the nostalgia wave? I still love HSM, HM, etc, but between unnecessary podcasts, revivals and reunions, it seems like they just canāt stop milking the cow.

For the HSM 20th anniversary Disney had a small employee celebration on their lot and Lucas, Monique and Ashley attended because those 3 obviously have all the time in the world.

I really don’t like how shady he’s being and preseting himself as the sentimental and grateful one as opposed to “others”. I guess is way easier to want to keep attaching yourself to HSM when you don’t have much else going on in your career.
HSM it’s a piece of art that was important for a generation but it was also a job for the actors. It’s completely valid to not want to return to an old job, that doesn’t make you ungrateful.
And frankly we don’t need any more lazy, cash grabbing reunions.
If you miss an old show or movie just watch it.

He’s basically just capitalized on the show and the success he brought over and over and not really advanced his career in a significant way since…
The people he seems to be taking jabs at have moved onto bigger, arguably better things and clearly don’t have much reverence for a series of Disney movies they made pretty much at the start of their careers. And there is absolutely nothing wrong with that.
Grabeel probably needs to accept he wasn’t able to achieve ongoing success and move on with his life.
