My husband is diabetic. He has no feeling in his feet yet runs around in his bare feet around the house, garage and out to the mailbox. I keep telling him a small wound could end up with an amputation. His stepfather got a blister from new work boots. He was diabetic. My MIL thought she was helping him by cleansing it with a Q-tip and hydrogen peroxide. A month later he lost a toe. When he died at home 3 months later they did an autopsy. His internal organs were septic and some had gangrene.

I work in a wound center. You can do so much to improve these conditions. Hyperbaric oxygen, debriding the tissue, arterial flow help, nutrition, meds etc. Amputation is the last result after exhausing other options.
My f.i.l has diabetes and he takes it very seriously. He's had it his entire life, eats correctly and monitors it but hes elderly now and it's harder for him to manage it. Seems like every year he looses a toe or 2. He says he doesn't feel his feet at all. It's very sad. He checks his feet everyday fear of an injury he is unaware of, hes terrified of loosing the whole foot which doctor keep telling him to prepair for. They say it's not a possibility but a matter of when.

She did say POSSIBLY loose it. I'd keep it and drink tons of charcoal water. And if that didn't work THEN amputate.
Amputation is not his first option
