World chess star Magnus Carlsen took a selfie with his opponent then reported her.

18 year old Kazakh player Alua Nurman asked for a photo before the game Carlsen agreed and smiled for the shot.

Right after that, he called the arbiter, and her phone was taken away: devices are banned during game.

Ya I mean that’s fair. Nice enough to take the selfie and then stick to the rules before they compete

I mean, he is not wrong, they take these matches pretty seriously, and im sure that she got the phone after it was done

  3. If it is against the rules, just call the arbiter from the jump. The ego fluff is weirdo behaviour.

Some people were saying she’d get disqualified if the match started and she still had her phone on her so I dont see anything wrong with this if thats true

She would’ve been DQ’ed if they’d caught her with it after the match actually started I’m pretty sure

I’ve seen this post before. Everyone defending him is a bit weird. He didn’t need an arbiter, good sportsmanship would’ve been telling her that she can’t have her phone and asking her to give it to someone. Getting an official is him acting above her. It’s just a silly power move.

I find this so funny lol nice of him. She would’ve been DQd if they found out she had her phone after they started the game.

  8. i think he was literally being nice here. she’s clearly a fan and he took a selfie, but just did his due diligence to make sure nothing sketchy happened

If she was seen with the phone during the match it’s an automatic dq.

He literally took a selfie & then made sure she wouldn’t get dq’d lol

  10. I usually get rubbed the wrong way when someone goes around me to tell someone else about my mistake instead of letting me know directly. Feels very condescending. But there are a lot of people who don’t speak the same languages in these kinds of tournaments, and the fact that he bothered to pose for her photo before saying something shows me he didn’t mean any harm by it.

If anything this is actually pretty cool that he let her take the selfie first, there’s good money at stake in these matches and he would’ve been within his right to report her there and then but he was like nah lets let her have this moment first.

Honestly, kind of the nicest way to go about this? He took the picture so she could have it, and then reporting it made sure the game between them was legal.
