    3-year-old immigrant suffered alleged sexual abuse during months in federal custody, family says


    During that time, according to court documents, the girl said she was sexually abused by an older child staying with her in foster care in Harlingen, Texas. A caregiver noticed the child’s underwear was on backward, according to the lawsuit. The girl then told the caregiver she was abused multiple times and it caused bleeding. Federal Office of Refugee Resettlement officials told the father that there had been an “accident” and his daughter would be examined, he told the AP in an interview.

    “I asked them, ‘What happened? I want to know. I’m her father. I want to know what’s going on,’ and they just told me that they couldn’t give me more information, that it was under investigation,” the father said.

    “To have your child abused while in the government’s care, to not understand what has happened or how to protect them, to not even be told about the abuse, it is unimaginable,” Fisher Flores (the lawyer representing the girl) said. “Children deserve safety and they belong with their parents.”

    The ORR and its parent agency, the Department of Health and Human Services, were named in the child’s lawsuit but did not respond to emails seeking comment.

      This is horrific. There is so much abuse going on behind the scenes in ice detention centers. To children, women, innocent people. I feel guilty for being able to carry on and go to work while others face the unimaginable.

      I don’t even have words. The hardships this child and her family has endured throughout their life is more than most people can imagine, and then THIS happens. Lifelong trauma, and for what?

      Separating children from their families puts them in harm’s way: mental harm, physical harm, systemic harm.

      This reckless and SADISTIC trump admin policy of separating families hurts children. 

      During the first administration, children were taken and LOST. The federal government said, “Cruelty is the point.” 

      Mothers can be jailed for child endangerment.

      The federal government is systematically endangering children.

      to make it clear, the father is a legal resident of the US, and the government intentionally separated his daughter from him, sending her to foster care, where she was abused, instead of reuniting the family. the father has been trying to get custody of his daughter ever since she was separated from her mother
