I recently took a long haul flight and 10 Things I Hate About You was one of the movies available. Why donāt we make movies like that anymore š„²
I’m just glad to see a little balance. The romcoms of the 80s and 90s normalized some pretty terrible behaviors and taught us all to have unrealistic expectations. I’m here for the real stuff.
I blame this on the popularity of situationships.
Bridgerton is like, single-handedly and steadfastly proving that this isnāt fully the case though.
Brittany Murphy started this trend in the early 00s with a movie that is very underrated. Little Black Book.
In a time when Rom Coms dominanted this movie subverted my expectations.
I feel like that’s only if you’re choosing to focus on specific movies. Idk I think rom-coms are still being released, just no one takes them seriously. But for sure, people are watching both if not multiple genres. Most popular rom-coms are still the older ones, though, because some people feel they were more authentic. But fear not, more than one genre of movie can exist in the zeitgeist at a time.
Also, I feel people like romantic shows more now because it allows for a longer slow burn feel. Even then, ‘People You Meet On Vacation’ is very popular and it was recently released.

Iāve always loved the āromanceā stories where it doesnāt work out. My fav romance books have always been Great Expectations and Wuthering Heights. Neither of them are romances. Idk why they just scratch an itch.

Marvel can make movie after movie about super heroes, but romcoms are just too unrealistic
For the same reason that Fast and Furious is my favorite franchise- I need a break from reality because itās too depressing and my antidepressants are already working overtime as it is.

I love both actually ā sometimes there’s a time and place for each one. I know the world suck so I understand people who don’t want a romantic drama, but sometimes I want something that will make me smile, cringe and feel sad at the same time. Other times I want sweetness and pure love. And honestly, I think it both be cathartic. Some times you need to to know that it’s OK to let go, or weather through really tough times.
Though I am a big fan of horror so that may overlap here now that I think about it.

Dark comedies filled this nich before. I think those are ripe for a comeback. “War of the Roses” “I love You To Death” “Death Becomes Her” “So, I Married an Axe Murder.” All still fun watches.
I fucking hate Past Lives because I want my happy endings.
It’s a good movie but goddamn it leaves me salty. Same with La La Land even though I understand the endings of both.
These types of films have always been the more interesting and fun to watch for me. If this is a new trend I’m gonna need a part time job to pay for how seated I will be.
