Gen Z is now the most active cinemagoing demographic. “What’s especially notable is how strongly they value the shared, communal aspect of the experience, reinforcing that theaters continue to play an important role as a social destination for younger audiences.”

Surprising
Does it count if they go and talk throughout the whole movie or spend the entire runtime on their phones?
This is true for me and my sister we always go to movies, we even go to previews
Glad I can do my part. I love going to the movies! Matter of fact, let me buy a ticket right now. I just remembered a movie I’ve been meaning to watch.
I love to see this! I’m a millennial who has always loved going to the movies and has recently formed some movie-buddy friend groups of people who want to actually go to the theater together and then talk about it afterwards. My spouse and I like to go, too.
We’ve also been on a subscription cancellation spree. I’m sick to death of paying for sloppy entertainment product that’s either out the ass expensive, or full of ads despite paying, with no heart, poor writing, and shitty acting. The subscription model in general is really getting old.
I agree with them and it’s my favorite part of doing to movie theaters. It’s too easy to just stay at home these days. Especially if you also work from home too.

I’m honestly very surprised by this tbh. But you know what? Good 👌
Good. The best things we can do for society is revive third spaces and local community interactions.
Who is going to the cinema to talk to people…
When I was younger, I loved moviegoing. It got me out of the house and in front of a big screen with friends. Then came college and 20s. Movie night became more about squeezing around a small screen to binge tv shows. Now it’s still binging shows but on a huge screen.
It’s interesting to see younger generations go back to basics.
movies are still pretty accessible compared to most everything else, and there is such variety today that there is something for everyone. we’ve also been going through it as a generation since birth, we need some escapism to remind ourselves that a better world is possible
I was told Gen Z doesn’t watch movies at all because they can’t sit through them 🤔
I always loved watching movies and i try to watch all the movies that i hear are good in the cinema, either with friends, family or even by myself.
We just have to get them into the mid-budget stuff that keeps underperforming
I’d say this is true, my older Gen Z friends and I love going to the movies and when we do the audience is usually mostly people around our age. Most of us even have AMC A List which is so underrated IMO.

Ok, cool, but taking and sharing Snapchats during the damn movie is why millennials like me don’t bother going anymore!

Gen Z don’t have meaningful experiences like previous generations did. The films they go watch are all determined by the algorithm.
Gosh I don’t know. I was in the theater this weekend with my son and there were only 7 people in our movie, maybe 10 people came out of the prior showing ahead of our showing, and maybe 15 people were in the lobby ahead of the next showing.
He said when he saw a movie with his grandparents for spring break they were also the only ones in the theater.
This makes me happy to read. Gen Z were mostly early to mid teens during the pandemic. Going to cinemas and communal spaces must still be a bit of a novelty and maybe they don’t take that stuff for granted like older generations may do.
I have gen z nieces and nephews and the pandemic was a fucked up time and robbed them of things they should’ve been doing. Even though they may not even realize that.
Can confirm. I have an AMC A-List membership and try going to the movies at least once a week 🍿
This is good to hear! Are movies affordable again? This was one of the reasons I stopped going. The cost was too high, and the quality of movies didn’t make it seem worth it to pay that much to sit through something you weren’t really that interested in anymore.
Now, I see things that actually seem worth it, but I have a disability that makes the theater experience too stimulating so I’m not able to go. That and I’m broke 😭
I’m 30 and I love going to the movies. I’d go more often if it were not for the price. If you want the whole experience (snacks + drinks) it’s easily 45-50$ (CAD anyway) per person. I’ve given the suggestion of a movie theater gift card as Christmas and birthday gifts for like 3 years in a row now.
I thought we killed the movies guess it’s back
Finally, Gen Z is behaving not completely disheartening for once. Maybe there is hope for them yet.
I just wish movie tickets were a bit cheaper.
I love going to the movies but going out seems more like a luxury every passing day.
Considering it’s younger Gen Z and Gen Alpha’s that are bringing back film photography (largely with disposable cameras though and I am begging them to thrift cameras it’s cheaper than the disposables) this doesn’t surprise me.
That tracks for us. I feel like every other Gen Z-er I meet tries to sell me on AMC A-list and/or lives on their Letterboxd.
YUP! i love watching a movie. Idk why people stopped going.
Movie theaters being a social destination for young people is pretty much the main thing that diminishes the movie theater experience for me.
I’d prefer it if movie theaters were an important *movie-watching* destination for young people.
A list is so clutch
I hope this leads to Gen Alpha stepping away from Social Media in all its facets and undue influence.
Everyone else is working
certain movies just need to be watched for the first time in theaters.
Kids go to the movies. More at 11
my local theater makes the best fries
It’s funny because I just saw an article a month ago saying the exact opposite
Yeah, because there’s fuck all else to go to with friends anymore
Feels like a nothingburger of a story, just with Gen Z for clicks.
Teenagers and young adults have always been the most avid moviegoers.
The only theater in my city just closed, because the young people are definitely not going to the movies here.
Hell yea Gen Z. Getting out of the house! Gives me hope
Feels like this would be the case regardless eventually. Millennials are at marriage and having kids age. So we’re not out socialising or doing stuff like movies as much.
I went to the movies a lot when I was young. Covid + other life stuff = I haven’t been since the last Avengers.
I haven’t been to the movies since pre-COVID
