Coco Gauff speaks out following criticism for how her hair looked in new Miu Miu ad: “I’m not going to apologize for the way that my hair looked because there are other girls who have the exact same hair as me & I just wanted them to feel represented, that your hair is literally fine the way it is.”

it looked groomed. clean. and went with the vintagey vibe. did yall want her in a 42” busdown for miumiu? i’d be concerned if she said they didn’t have a stylist on said that could work with her hair type. that seems to be a bigger issue on these sets. not the model.

A black woman being pressured to apologize for her hair actually makes me so sick.

Good for her. She looks great in the ad and sends a good, well timed message.
Lately I’ve been seeing an increase in women with type 3 and 4 hair feeling fed up with having to slick back their hair in tight and damaging styles or using heat on it in order to be seen as “put together” or “tidy”, and are instead opting towards simple loose ponytails and buns. Of course it’s less damaging to the hair and scalp, but it’s also such a pretty, soft and feminine look.

She’s my fav player in the WTA currently. I honestly wish she’d just ignore this stuff. It’s only going to bring you down and affect your game (I think social media has really hurt Osaka, for example). Just keep winning. The losers will think what they’ll think.

She looks great, love her outfilt and I don’t see what is wrong with her hair? I’m not sure what anyone is talking about. This is like Simone Biles and getting dragged for her Olympic bun (while winning, but still they focus on her hair).

It is sad she has to explain herself, it is clear this really bothers her but no matter what she does, people will always be critical of her. There seems to be a special kind of hatred towards successful women, especially women of color, in this country (and probably fair to say the world in general). No matter how great Coco is, there will always be little, insecure people who criticize out of jealousy.

She’s right, and she looked lovely! I saw mostly my own people complaining; I need them to please try harder to release all that internalized anti-Blackness they’re holding onto.

  7. she really looks great in the picture. so disappointing she has to comment on this

She has had to deal with the expectation of being the new Serena Williams since she was fourteen fucking years old, her maturity and grace is amazing and I bet absolutely draining to maintain. She should tell these people to Fuck Off! You can see her considering her words. Coco girl go off on them!

If your natural hair not tucked away in a wig, or a “protective” hairstyle peoole always gonna fix their mouth to say its not done or neat…especially if its short. We gotta unpack this

I’m raising three Black girls, and it pains me to think about how exhausting it’s going to be for them to have to be exposed to this type of garbage in mainstream and social media circles.

All my partner and I can do is instill confidence and self assurance in them, so they never feel pressured to conform to these bullshit Eurocentric standards. Especially living where we do, when it’s predominantly white.

Shoutout to Coco for speaking up and being proud of who she is. That type of representation matters more than she’ll ever know. Her parents raised her right.

She is so awesome, and at such a young age… it takes true strength and confidence to react to social media garbage in this way and choose to spread a message of love and kindness and understanding… I am cheering for Coco during clay season and ALL YEAR LONG!!!

  12. As a 4C girlie, I love that she wore her hair as is. We’re told so much we need to “straighten” our hair to be “presentable”. No, our hair is fine as is.

The fact that people care enough about this stuff to abuse someone and have her feel the need to respond is so alien to me.

God forbid a black woman dare have her hair look like her actual hair. Good for her.

Do y’all remember when H&M had that one advertisement of the kids who had just gotten out of school and the black girl had her kinky 4-C hair pulled up?

And do you remember how everybody keeps saying how awful it was that they let her go outside looking like that?

Texturism is a real thing even within the black community.

It’s the fact that we say that we need to have natural hair representation, but then when girls actually do their natural hair and the edges are untouched, people still have a problem with it, including us 😬

It’s really sad because it means that we have let the idea of having good hair still be seen as an ideal in our community.

God, being a black person with hair is EXHAUSTING because you get criticized for your hair by black folk AND non-black ppl.

What world are we living in that a grown ass woman is expected to APOLOGIZE FOR HER OWN HAIR?!?

I love Coco. I loathe anyone who feels the need to hate on women who don’t fit their idea of beauty.

She’s also one of the only players that honestly answered questions about the ICE bullshit.

    Go on Queen.
