American Girl is reintroducing the eight original historical characters to celebrate its 40th anniversary. Each girl will come with her signature meet outfit, accessories and book, with packaging inspired by the dolls’ original 1986 design.

I know I’m not the demographic for these dolls anymore, but when I recently looked at their roster I was SHOCKED at how many of the original girls are gone. Made me feel decrepit to see they have a 90’s girl now hahaha

Eight original? Ahem, some of us are not that old and know there were originally three.

Anyway this is cool and I’m glad they didn’t yassify them.

I had Samantha! She was my favorite. I remember my mom was so mad I didnt get Kiersten or Felicity because I had blonde hair and she thought I should get the doll that looked like me 🙄

$175 each? I knew it would be expensive but damn. Not that I need an American Girl doll at this stage in my life, but I was tempted to fulfill my childhood dream of owning Kirsten or Felicity for a hot sec there.

So after years of trying to “modernize” and change the formula they finally realized that people actually liked the original historic dolls?

  6. I had Addy and loooooved her so much. Also I’m old enough to remember when kit was announced and thinking she was so *modern*. Seeing the yasssifyed versions is breaking my brain.

  7. Good! my kid got into this recently and still has my old addy doll, as well as a new one, but most of the new dolls are just dolls without the accompanying history books/tales behind them, which I feel like was kind of the point?

  8. I feel like Samantha has been an influence on my general fashion vibe and aesthetic my whole life.

Will they release all the furniture tho?? I remember so desperately wanting it but we couldn’t even afford the doll back then. I remember the entire set was $995 and vowing that I’d buy my own when I got older. But I don’t know if they even do those anymore?

  9. I had a Molly that my uncle donated with all the rest of my dolls in middle school because he and my parents deemed me “too old” for dolls 🥲
Also my mom had NO idea he donated Molly and yet, I never got a replacement. SHAME

It always bothered me how the Molly doll has blue eyes, when the book art shows her with brown. I was a brown haired, brown eyed, bespectacled child who always loved Molly best. ♥️

  11. I had Kirsten and Addy. My Kirsten still has her original braids, I never took them out!

  12. Insane that I can name 7 of the 8 still by sight. (The last one was after my time.)

A moment of silence for all the girls who undid Kirsten’s braids and could never get them back to factory settings! 😂

Trying to figure out how I can justify buying my 4 year old a $200 Kristen doll because I always wanted one of these but never got one. This is after I bought her a bitty baby doll that she has proceeded to trash then abandon

Kit was my gorlll. Still have her and Julie in my attic. Hopefully for my own daughter one day!

I remember when some of these were added and I was born in 1988. Still have my Kirsten doll tho 😂

  17. Man, I’m old enough to remember when Josephina, Kaya, and Kit weren’t even in this lineup.

Awe I wish it included their friends. I still have my old Nellie doll and always wanted an Emily one, too. Shout out to my Mom for insisting we keep her when my teenage self was “too old for dolls.”

My neighbor cut my Felicity’s hair when we were like 9 and I’ll never forgive her for it.

  20. Being in whatever socioeconomic class that could afford the books but not the dolls and accessories 🙋🏻‍♀️

  21. This is great timing because I had a baby girl last year and found my Samantha doll and she’s ruined 😭 so Im sending her off to the doll hospital for me and getting my girl a new one. Getting Samantha for Christmas was one of my happiest childhood moments and I sobbed when I found her under the tree

damn I was just getting ready to sell my og Kristen! mama needs her to stay valuable!!

As someone is an adult collector, we’re all super excited about this. Some of them are still sold with the horrendous BeForever outfits, and a lot of us have been wantin them to go back to the OG outfits. I’m also hoping they will rerelease some of the rest of their collections because certain items are impossible to find secondhand.

When people are surprised at millennial activism I’m like I had the Kirsten doll as a child, an immigrant child to Minnesota who loses a friend to disease. My best friend had an Addy doll and as a white child Addy’s book was the first exposure I had to the horrors of US slavery in a way that made sense a child.

  25. Story time: I grew up wanting an american girl doll SO BAD. My cousins had a good portion of, if not potentially all, of the original historic dolls and tons of accessories and i was always so excited to go to their house and play with them. They probably still have them too. But anyway, i could never convince my grandparents to get me one until i was 12 years old. I got the doll of the year for my birthday, McKenna. My older cousin was there when i unboxed her and i was so excited until he said something like “a doll? Arent you too old for dolls?” And i instantly got really insecure about it. I still played with her for about a year and converted a bookshelf i had into a multi story apartment for her even though she was the only doll i had. But that comment led to me never asking for anything like that again and she lived in the top of my closet for years afterwards. I still have her but most of her accessories are gone and shes currently in my storage unit because i live in an RV and theres very limited space available. But i still think about her sometimes and consider pulling her out when i live in an actual house again and rebuilding her an apartment.

Edit: for the record i am currently 25 and will be 26 in august lol

  26. Kirsten, Samantha, and Molly were my gorlsssss (speaking as a Viet American who only read their books and could never afford the actual dolls 😂)

I still have my Addy doll. I got her in ummmm I think it was 1998. Still good as new, except her hair needs to be spruced up. I might legit get Felicity because she was my other favorite and I never got her.

I wanted a Josephine and Kaya doll so bad but my parents wouldn’t let me get me one. The dolls were so expensive that I could only get a doll that looked like me.

The Felicity and Addy books were my absolute favorite to read in the 90s. I didn’t realize they removed them from the collection.
