Throwback to when Katy Perry joked about the pressures on female artists: “In my next life I’m gonna come back as Ed Sheeran. Me, my guitar, some cargo shorts and a loop pedal.”

  1. No one’s stopping you from doing that. You chose to perform dance pop music that you didn’t write.

  2. I get what she means but she could’ve picked a better example bc ed is actually very talented

  3. I get her point, but then you have Billie Eillish running around dressed in cargo shorts and a jersey. To a degree it’s a choice.

  4. I think she’s ignoring the fact that her fame largely comes from those things. If she couod do it with just a loop pedal she would. Katy Perry in a curated show that incorporates visuals and music, not just a musician.

She could do exactly that and still earn millions of dollars from some boring ass tour

Oh shit, she’s gonna come back as someone with actual talent who can sing? I didn’t know that was an option!

Ehhhh I think it depends on the artist and what expectations they have set

Well she’s right but it would also help if she had as much talent as Ed Sheeran.

I agree that women in the arts face a ton of extra hurdles, but what a stray to Ed Sheeran lol.

I mean, Adele and Celine are two goats and they just stand and sing.

  10. I actually way prefer her older performance right before and after I kissed a girl came out. It was just her with an acoustic guitar on stage! The energy and emotion felt raw and real. All of this over the top production just feels gimmicky

Ed Sheeran vs herself is a terrible example, she’s one of the least talented mega popstars when it comes to vocals so she makes up for it in other regions.

Arianna Grande vs Ed Sheeran would be a better comparison and a more casual arianna set would fucking kill it.

Not to mention complaining about what others do for their money when you’ve made it to the pinnacle of stardom in a field with people who make next to nothing whilst dedicating their entire lives to the craft is a bit silly.

  12. I agree that there is a lot of unfair pressure on women in the industry but I don’t think it has to do with the complexity of their music. I enjoy a lot of instrumentally “simple” (not meant as an insult) music, and also the super involved stuff. It does seem much harder for women to break out, though

Set your sights lower and come back as Justin Beiber. Just gotta go on stage, scroll through YouTube, and do some karaoke

  14. She ain’t entitled to being a pop star, cargo shorts or not. If she thinks she is talented enough to do Eds thing, why don’t she do it that way instead?

    Right message, wrong messenger ng

She worked with a LITERAL rapist and has a history of sexually assaulting others

I’m not aware of Ed Sheeran doing anything like that

She went to space and I haven’t, so she’s got me beat there ngl

I don’t know the full context, but based on the costume, I took it less as a comment on talent and more about how female artists have to do a lot more on tour like multiple outfit changes and production, while male artists can keep it simple. I could be wrong though.

  17. So right. I’m seeing posts on my social media praising how Justing “reinvented” storytelling and how everything was carefully planned

The vast majority of pop fans are women. Why do women place these weird beauty standards on female artists?

If you have great voice and play and instrument, you can just stand and do that, if you rely on auto tune and other things, well you have to do a show. Either you are male or female that’s my opinion.

Kinda depends on the music though right? Nobody is forcing Olivia Dean, Raye, Adele, Lola Young to do full on choreo and massive productions.

Florence Welch could stand in a spotlight at a microphone and sing and everyone would be very happy.

I saw Alicia Keys in the era where she decided to try dancing and tbh, I wished I’d gotten a classic piano Alicia Keys show.

Mariah Carey lip syncs her entire show and does not dance.

Ed Sheeran is a singer-songwriter and Justin Bieber is an R&B singer who was a full dancing popstar early in his career when he wasn’t in control of his own art.

The unfortunate part was calling out Ed Sheeran. There so many shittier artist who do way less.

I mean I loved her acoustic mtv unplugged, people actually wanted her to sing thinking of you and she made fun of them/herself like oh I don’t sing like that but no one was making fun of her … she can be a more stripped down musician if she wants I would def listen but also she does have a point sex sells

Katy had received valid criticism for working with Dr. Luke or the stupid space thing but she’s on the money for this one
