Marilyn Monroe Entertains U.S. Troops Stationed in South Korea
In 1954, 27-year-old Marilyn Monroe interrupted her honeymoon in Japan with her then-husband, baseball legend Joe DiMaggio, after accepting a U.S. military invitation to entertain American troops stationed in South Korea, who remained there after the 1953 Korean War armistice.
Over four frigid days, she toured more than 10 military bases, put on 10 back-to-back open-air shows for over 100,000 soldiers, and sang her iconic hits in a glamorous slip dress despite the bitter subzero cold.
Monroe later recalled this trip made her feel like a true star for the first time, though the unplanned detour also strained her fragile, short-lived marriage.
