I love Alysa Liu and what she’s done with her sport. She’s very much in the spotlight with Hollywood right now and I’m wondering how into she is. Sometimes, to me, she appears very uncomfortable.

As a figure skating fan and someone who’s followed Alysa’s career since she was 13, I love this for her.

  4. I usually hate seeing this American centric lists but this one is deserved, because I legit can’t escape her on any social media platform haha (I dont really mind it)

  5. Alright I’ll bite, what have I missed about her/OOTL on to where she’s so constantly in the news?

Im not disparaging her, just genuinely curious as to how she’s constantly in my Reddit feeds.

It always seem positive so that’s great, but why is HER story specifically any different outside of the medals” she won?

I love Bowen’s mastery of language, both spoken and written. This was really a joy to read.

  7. This is such a nice tribute and wonderfully written, and it really taps into the truth of what she accomplished at the games and how it was way more than just a gold medal. Bowen is a great writer!

Best in the world??? Yes, I know she controversially won the Olympics but don’t think they know figure skating.

Honestly, I’m not sure I agree with this kind of ranking. It feels like a typical example of American corporate media.

If we look at her objectively as a skater, she is definitely among the best in the world right now. But that has to be considered in light of the specific circumstances that led to her success, which shouldn’t be ignored.

More importantly, what has she actually influenced in figure skating? Has she introduced anything technically or stylistically different compared to other top skaters, like Kaori Sakamoto and co? I don’t really think so.

We can talk about her consistency, which is great, but she was jumping triples…and that’s already the standard in women’s figure skating.

So I’m not sure what exactly sets her apart in a way that changes the discipline.
So the question remains…what exactly is her impact on figure skating? If there is one, it still needs time to become clear.

And there’s also an ‘elephant in the room’..a variable that could significantly affect the future of women’s figure skating..which makes it even harder to assess her long term influence right now.

I’m happy for her success and I wish her the best. However, it does feel like she’s being pushed quite heavily, and it’s hard not to notice.

How did Alysa make her win feels “unsentimental to herself”? It’s clearly meaningful for her on a personal and artistic level, not the “winning” itself, but sharing her art comes off as very sentimental to me. Don’t understand the praise for this blurb. To me it does not make sense.

Edit: I noticed she has 8 million followers for some reason. It seems I’m not the only one who’s confused by the situation.

I couldn’t help but watch a few of her competition videos after learning about her. I think her happiness on ice is really showing and that’s what people are latching onto. we’ve seen many great figure skaters, but right now it’s watching someone who truly doesn’t “need” any of it, she just does it and loves it. No pandering to judges or insane coaches.

You see the results in her skating. The emotion she brings out feels real.
