Lena Dunham is not right about a lot, but she’s right about our healthcare system (via The View)

  1. She’s full of shit. She campaigned for Hillary “Medicare for all will never come to pass” Clinton in the 2016 primary

She’s not my favorite either, but she isn’t wrong; I’d certainly like to be able to go to Urgent Care or the hospital without fear of an outrageous bill.

As a guitar teacher, I’m excited to teach people guitar.  I’d do it free if it meant I’d have food and shelter covered. Hell, I still kinda teach for free, anyway.

Everytime I go to the doctor, I rarely get the same vibe.

Saying the Americans healthcare system needs to change is hardly a brave take, even if it’s right.

  6. Lena Dunham has some major blind spots and I question some of the decisions she has made re: what to write about and how to express herself. That said, I don’t really believe the Lena Dunham we are witnessing today is quite as naive or self-absorbed as the Lena Dunham she was when she wrote her first memoir. I read an interview with her in the New Yorker around the time I started binging Girls, and I think there is a wryness/irony to her writing on the show and outside of it that some miss.

I hope we can allow for the possibility that this woman might have become minutely wiser in the space of a decade.

Democrats removed Medicare For All from their platform in 2024 (in addition to other things that moved them further right), and any potential candidate for 2028 you see right now, will absolutely not be promising healthcare.

I am by no means a Lena Dunham apologist, but I really appreciate her talking about this.

Like Dunham, I have chronic health issues. I am also fortunate enough to have good health insurance and resources to help mitigate a lot of my symptoms. I don’t think I understood how horrible healthcare under capitalism really is, until I fell ill about a decade ago. While pouring through various subs/groups trying to find remedies for my problems, I realized most people I encountered didn’t have the resources I did to combat our shared health issues. I’m aware it’s a privileged take to have been surprised at all, but it completely opened my eyes. I imagine Lena had a similar realization.

All that to say, because she is a person with a certain amount of influence, I’m glad she’s taking about this. There are plenty of celebrities with health issues that wouldn’t bother talking about the problems with US healthcare publicly because they have the means to deal with their ailments. They don’t want to get “political.” For all her shortcomings, I’m grateful Dunham is speaking about it, as the healthcare situation here seems more dire than ever.

*All this to say, demand healthcare for all from your reps and senators. There is more than enough wealth to pay for it.

Every time I see a photo of her with the black hair I think it’s Kelly Cutrone for a millisecond. 👀

Insurance companies in modern capitalist societies are *only* cancers that raise prices and decrease efficacy of whatever industry they function in.

Yes my health is a right! Not a privilege! Society needs to cook, exercise, and sleep for me.

Is the show girls good? I’ve heard mixed things – know it’s a bit older now lol but never watched it back then.

  12. Even my MAGA in-laws admitted, now that they are over 70 years old, that we need universal healthcare.
