really what’s this mass delusion when it comes to this man
Sage_Planter on
I’m very curious if the movie would have performed differently if he were still alive. Would people have felt more guilt about supporting it, or would they have just been like lol whatever?

I don’t recall canceling MJ. If anything the man has been impervious to the gossip for ages (helps when you dead)

He’s the most famous person of all time!

I think it more so proves that there’s no PR, or publicity stunt quite like dying. I mean, we’ve always kinda known that, but MJ got the most insane death bump anyone has ever, or probably ever will get.

People really just find pedophilia to be a very subjective topic. How people treat pedophiles is near entirely dependent upon the talent and fane level of the person molesting children.

I hate that we keep lifting up pedophiles. Just stop it already.

The “cancelling” tool can only be used so much.
We lived through a period where so many people were cancelled (or attempted) for past bad behavior that the public got burned out on it.
Sometimes the bad behavior really was heinous and well documented, sometimes it was just alleged and in bad taste.
It’s gotten to the point where people would rather cheer for the celebrity being attacked.

A large part of the world doesn’t give a shit about the allegations.

The reaction to this juxtaposed with the reaction to Sabrina Carpenter, Olivia Rodrigo, and Ariana Grande are *very* telling to me.
I know I know “Not everything is a feminist witch hunt!” But what if it is?

Only another $300M to go to break even. Utterly beggars belief that we all want Epstein held accountable as the pedo scum he was but Jackson gets a pass from so many. There’s as many accusers came forward for both men so no one should be hero worshipping MJ. Cultural impact should not negate consequences or accountability and he dodged both because of who he was and his wealth.

I mean the President was best friends with one of the more notorious pedophiles, and has like a million claims of sexual assault, rape against minors, among other heinous shit.
People clutching their pearls over child rape seem to pick and choose when it applies.

Yeah, it’s weird. A US senator was forced to resign because of a photo of him pretending to squeeze a sleeping lady’s boob.
If MJ didn’t fuck little boys (narrator: he did), he still had them sleep in his bed while on tour and basically paid off the parents to let it happen. If anyone deserves to be cancelled, it’s him. But here we are.
I lost all respect for him as a person, but I still enjoy his music. I do draw the line at paying to see a bio film that completely whitewashes and waives that part of his life. Maybe I’m on an island that way, but whatever.

People are blind to certain people. Elvis dated a 14 year old. However to many, especially the older generations, those two are legends and cancel culture doesn’t work with them. Definitely don’t mean either man was a good person, or that neither was guilty of shit but people have been blind to pedophile when it comes to their favourite artist for decades. I’m surprised people thought the movie would do poorly tbh.

The truth of Michael is more complicated than it seems at the outset. No jury was ever able to convict him of any crime, which can embolden his supporters, and several people in his life (former household staff, family friends, etc), tried to extort him over these claims. It’s very slippery when you lay out all the facts, even when it seems very obvious and blatant.
By all accounts, he did a lot of good for children by giving time and lots of money to charity. He himself was an abused child. Of course, none of this negates or excuses what he may have likely done, but it creates cracks in the narrative that fans willing blast through because they like his music or find his existence meaningful to them and their communities

Anyone who’s paying attention know this is basically true. Popular men can get away with abusing teenage girls, seducing people into cults, rape, stealing from charities—you name it. As long as they aren’t convicted, they often go about their business as usual. But if a woman is rude to someone or has the audacity to age normally, she’s often burned at the steak by the Internet mobs.

It’s very rare for any celebrity to truly be cancelled unless they’re convicted of their crimes and even then that’s not a guarantee. Look at how Roman Polanski flourished after his rape conviction
With MJ, he’s the biggest pop star in the world, his music is still so influential and it’s hard for anyone to grow up and not at least be aware of who he was. Him dying in his 50s also helped the narrative that his many fans have of him. He was a tortured soul with a rough childhood who his accusers lied about. That’s genuinely what most of them think. And even with the people who do think he was a pedo, they don’t care. They still like him as an artist and probably will still go watch this film. He’s far too big to fall, sadly there is a level of fame you can get to, where it’s impossible to truly cancel that person. He reached that level before his death and more so after it
Even in the industry, people have always cared more about the art than anything else. It’s why so many celebrities defended Polanski and why so many musicians defend Chris Brown. Someone could commit the worst crimes and they’ll still have a few of their peers come out and say oh but they are so talented and they did x y z
The only famous male celebs that I can think of that were truly cancelled (their mainstream career is over) have been Armie Hammer, James Franco, Bill Cosby, Joss Whedon and Kevin Spacey

Why are they only addressing the male victims? Why aren’t they acknowledging the female victims, too? The lawsuit by the Cascio siblings filed in February also includes their sister who alleges abuse.

People generally separate art from the artist. If MJ wasn’t such a great artist he would be a lot less popular.
