It was really awesome that a woman trainer won the derby for the first time. The whole thing was clouded by what happened to Great White before the race though. The sport is just so cruel. My daughter recently became an equestrian so we have been thrown into the world of horses. Young horses like those in the derby are just so green and seeing them so scared of the stalls and the chaos and knowing they are essentially still babies who are pushed is just so hard to watch.

Last place to first place. History made. Cherie DeVaux just proved that the only thing faster than that horse is the breaking of old barriers. Women belong in the winner’s circle.
