Robert Irwin and Terri Irwin are reflecting on Steve Irwin’s legacy as the 20-year anniversary of his passing approaches. Speaking with Access Hollywood at the annual Steve Irwin Gala in Las Vegas on May 2, the mother-son duo shared what they think would surprise the iconic wildlife conservationist the most if he could see how his message continues to be spread across the world. “That we’re in Vegas, baby! He would be so impressed. I think we forget how philanthropic this city is, because, you know, the reputation is what happens here, stays here. But actually, the work that people are doing in Las Vegas for humanitarian aid and conservation work – the ripples are felt around the world. And it’s such a special opportunity to take Steve’s message to the big city. And it couldn’t get bigger than Vegas,” Terri said. Robert added that his dad’s character continues to touch people on a daily basis as he additionally praised his mom for all that she does to keeps his work and memory alive. “I think it’s interesting to me, like every single day, someone at some point comes up to me to to share some way that dad inspired them. And I think the fact that 20 years on, his message is felt stronger than ever. I mean, that just goes to show, I think, two things: What an incredibly powerful and unifying figure he was and still is, but also what an incredible and strong individual It takes – my mom – to keep that all going, to keep that legacy alive. That legacy would not be alive without mum,” he noted. Irwin, known as “The Crocodile Hunter,” passed away in Sept. 2006. Bindi Irwin was absent from Saturday’s event due to her ongoing health journey, as she shared in a recorded video that, despite doing better, traveling can still be “tricky” for her.
