Javier Bardem shared rare comments about his “beautiful” wife Penélope Cruz and their life with their two kids in a new interview with Variety.

The actor opened up about “emotional contact” in the couple’s 15-year marriage when they worked together on their upcoming movie Bunker.

Bardem also spoke about how they’re approaching social media and phones their two kids Leo, 15, and Luna, 12.

Despite being household names, Penélope Cruz and Javier Bardem are one of the most private couples in the film industry, rarely stepping out together on the red carpet or starring in the same films together. However, the Dune actor shared rare comments on his life with his “beautiful” wife in a new interview, as well as how working together on an upcoming film reinforced a setting for “emotional contact” in their 15-year marriage.

Bardem told Variety in an interview published on May 5 that the couple try to “compartmentalize life and fiction” during their personal life in Spain, sharing, “We don’t waste too much time talking about work, though we love what we do.” However, the No Country For Old Men actor was excited to work on their new movie Bunker together with his former Vicky Cristina Barcelona co-star.

“It’s a beautiful story that is going to help us see again,” Bardem—who got married to Cruz in 2010 and shares kids Leo, 15, and Luna, 12, with her—told the publication. He explained, “Because sometimes you are immersed in your daily shit and the kids and the house, and it’s like—when do you sit down and look at each other again? When do you start to breathe again, and take the other person in?”

After pursuing separate projects for most of their marriage, the Skyfall actor said he relished the idea of reconnecting during work hours. “OK, now we are obliged to sit down, look at ourselves, listen to each other and be in emotional contact for many hours,” he added.

Bardem also had no shortage of praise for his other half, whom he first met in 1992 met on the set of Jamón, Jamón. “She’s a woman I’m so blessed by having had the chance to be at the same time, in the same place, in life,” he said. “Penélope is an amazing, beautiful, good human being— the way she relates to her family, to her friends, to our kids, to me, to herself. It’s been a lot of years, and I haven’t seen a hint of malice in her.”

“On top of that, she’s amazingly fucking beautiful!” he added. “When I see her being photographed on some magazines, I go, ‘Is that my wife? Jesus, is it? It must be!’”

Bardem also shared rare comments on the couple’s parenting style now that Leo and Luna are on the cusp or in the midst of their teenage years. He revealed that his 15-year-old son “got his first phone less than a year ago,” but that there is “no social media, of course.” He added, “They work with computers at school, which we are okay with and not okay with.”
