If you’re excited for the upcoming film “The Sheep Detectives” about a flock of talking sheep finding their purpose in the world, you’ll probably enjoy “Babe.” While it looks like a simple children’s movie, it was one of the first films to use digital “mouth replacement” technology, allowing real animals to appear to speak without looking like a cartoon. It earned seven Academy Award nominations and deserved every single one for being so cute and charming.
“Babe” centers on a young piglet who is won at a county fair by farmer Arthur Hoggett (James Cromwell) and brought to live on his farm. There, Babe (Christine Cavanaugh) is taken in by a Border Collie named Fly (Miriam Margolyes) and learns the routines of the animals around him. Settling into farm life, Babe forms bonds with the other animals, including a duck named Ferdinand (Danny Mann) and Fly’s partner Rex (Hugo Weaving). When unexpected situations arise involving the sheep, Babe begins to take on surprising new responsibilities.

It’s remembered as much for its incredible production backstory as for its critical acclaim. In fact, the film is arguably the crown jewel of Matthew McConaughey’s pivot from rom-com lead to serious dramatic actor, as he had to undergo a drastic physical transformation for the role.

Ron Woodroof (McConaughey) is a Texas electrician and rodeo rider who is diagnosed with HIV in the mid-1980s after being hospitalized following an accident. Told he has a limited time to live, he begins researching treatments after struggling to access legal medication in the United States. He travels internationally to obtain alternative drugs and brings them back to Texas, where he forms an underground network to distribute them to other patients. If you (somehow) weren’t already aware, “Hot Fuzz” is the second installment in Edgar Wright’s celebrated Three Flavours Cornetto Trilogy, preceded by “Shaun of the Dead” and followed by “The World’s End.” While it’s technically a “parody,” it functions more as a high-octane love letter to action cinema. I truly believe it’s one of the greatest comedies of the 21st century, and that all comes down to the real-life friendship of Simon Pegg and Nick Frost shining through.
“Hot Fuzz” follows Nicholas Angel (Pegg), a highly skilled London police officer who is reassigned to a quiet rural village after his success makes his colleagues look bad. He is partnered with Danny Butterman (Frost), an enthusiastic but inexperienced local officer whose fascination with action movies shapes how he views police work. After settling in, Angel begins investigating a series of unusual deaths in the village that have all been officially ruled as accidents.

Not too dark, of course, since it also leans into comedy-mystery. “The Wolf of Snow Hollow” is a unique genre-blender that arrived in 2020, written, directed by, and starring Jim Cummings. It’s a film that wears many hats: part small-town procedural, part creature feature, and part character study. It captures the claustrophobia of a small town under siege, with much of the comedy coming from awkward human interactions.
“The Wolf of Snow Hollow” is set in a small Utah mountain town where a series of brutal killings occur during full moons. The local sheriff, John (Cummings), already dealing with personal and professional pressures, leads the investigation while trying to convince himself there’s no supernatural explanation for what’s happening. As the body count rises, suspicion spreads through the community and the case becomes increasingly difficult to control.
