“How did we get here as a culture?” Ms Paltrow asked. “Obviously, there’s so much revenue and profit driving this whole thing, that’s at the heart of it.
“But how do you think we got to this place in culture where nothing matters and now all that matters is kind of these super-rich white dudes who are breaking rules, setting rules, seemingly not caring so much about the downstream impact on everything, from health to culture.”

Her remarks appeared directed at prominent tech figures, including Meta Chief Executive Mark Zuckerberg, leaving Ms Swisher to echo Ms Paltrow’s concerns and suggest that society has developed an unhealthy reverence for innovation and financial success.
“I think we have an idolatry of innovators, an idolatry of wealth, and if you’re wealthy, you must be smarter – when they got all manner of shortcuts,” Ms Swisher responded. “And the innovations that they took advantage of were paid for by the American public, by the way.”
The journalist also questioned the concentration of power among a narrow demographic, asking why “a small, homogeneous group of people get to decide for the rest of us.”
Ms Paltrow then turned to broader questions about American attitudes towards success and social standing.

“I feel like there’s something so endemic to being an American about this idea that anybody can do it from whatever socioeconomic background. But we put this hierarchy… It’s like we’re so hungry for a hierarchy to make sense of our lives or something like that.”
The conversation quickly drew criticism online, with many pointing to the apparent contradiction between Ms Paltrow’s message and her own circumstances.
The Goop founder has an estimated fortune of around £160 million, and grew up in privileged surroundings as the daughter of Emmy-winning actress Blythe Danner and Hollywood producer Bruce Paltrow.
“Super rich white dudes? Coming from Paltrow, that is kinda funny,” one commenter wrote on Instagram.
Many fans of the actress claimed ‘Pot. Kettle. Black’ after hearing her comments

Another noted: “I can appreciate the question, but your brand is based on luxury and excessive wealth.”
“You are not so far from them, girl!” added a third critic. (sic)
Several social media users branded the interview “tone-deaf,” whilst others invoked the phrase “pot, meet kettle” to describe what they saw as glaring hypocrisy from the Oscar-winning actress.
Nevertheless, Ms Paltrow found support from fans who argued her wealth and influence made her the ideal messenger for such discussions.
“People hating on Gwyneth for calling this out are missing the point, which is that someone like her (rich and wealthy) is where it needs to come from to be heard by us poors to see and realise they aren’t special, just privileged,” one defender wrote.
Another supporter added: “I’m glad you are talking about this. You have sway because people admire you. Please keep doing this!” (sic)
The actress has previously addressed her advantaged background, describing herself as “one of the original nepo babies” in an interview with People magazine back in March.
“I was extraordinarily lucky to be given opportunities early on,” she acknowledged, whilst maintaining that her famous lineage did not guarantee her success.
