There’s certainly a lot of choice on streaming services these days, with a seemingly endless list of movies to watch. Add to that the fact that more and more are added constantly, which can make it hard to pick which ones are worth your time.

Luckily, we’re on hand to sift through and pick some of the best new movie additions to the likes of Netflix, BBC iPlayer and more for you to settle in with this weekend. Among the highlights are Tom Hardy’s highest-rated film, as well as a classic modern British indie gem.

Here are five of the best, plus a few other great movies to add to your watchlists.

Best movie new to Netflix this week

Argo: This historical drama tells the story of a CIA operative who poses as a Hollywood producer, pretending to scout locations in Iran for a movie in order to rescue six US diplomats during the hostage crisis in 1979.

Starring and directed by Ben Affleck, this tense and entertaining flick won the Best Picture Oscar back in 2013 – though Affleck was controversially snubbed for Best Director. Bryan Cranston, Alan Arkin and John Goodman also star.

Also new to Netflix this week: A History of Violence, Sully, Scarface, The Dark Knight trilogy, Game Night, Remarkably Bright Creatures

Best movie new to Prime Video this week

Mad Max: Fury Road: Regarded as one of the best action movies of recent times, this reboot of the Mad Max franchise is also star Tom Hardy’s top rated entry on Rotten Tomatoes (if you discount his narrated doc From the Ashes) at 97% fresh.

The 2015 film sees Hardy’s titular character reluctantly team up with Charlize Theron’s Imperator Furiosa as she helps the wives of villain Immortan Joe escape from the Citadel fortress. Flavorwire suggested Fury Road was “like a machine that roars at full throttle for two solid hours” – so strap in.

Best movie new to BBC iPlayer this week

1917: Director Sam Mendes’s World War I movie features George MacKay and Dean-Charles Chapman as two soldiers who are tasked with delivering a message to call off a doomed attack, traversing across No Man’s Land in the process.

Also featuring Andrew Scott, Benedict Cumberbatch and Colin Firth, the movie is well known for its one-shot approach, and was called “one of those films that leaves you in complete stunned silence as you watch it” by Subculture Entertainment.

Also new to BBC iPlayer this week: Mud, Waves, The Silence of the Lambs, Point Break (1991)

Best movie new to ITVX this week

The Dark Knight: Christopher Nolan’s second Batman movie is still seen as the best of the trilogy, not least because of Heath Ledger’s iconic performance as the Joker, which earned the late actor a posthumous Oscar. Released in 2008, The Dark Knight follows the Caped Crusader as he faces off against the legendary villain, who wants to see how far Bruce Wayne will go to save Gotham.

Sitting at a near-perfect 94% on Rotten Tomatoes, the site’s consensus labelled the movie “dark, complex, and unforgettable”. If you fancy getting up to speed beforehand, predecessor Batman Begins is also available to stream on ITVX.

Best movie new to Channel 4 this week

This Is England: While they are mainstays of British TV now, the likes of Stephen Graham and Vicky McClure showed their early promise in this classic 2006 drama from Shane Meadows, which has since spawned three sequel TV shows.

Set in the early 1980s, the story follows young Shaun (Thomas Turgoose) as he bonds with and joins a gang of skinheads. However, things take a dark turn when he gets involved with racist ex-con Combo (Graham). Joe Gilgun and Jack O’Connell also feature in supporting roles.

Also new to Channel 4 this week: Attack the Block, The Martian, Trainspotting, Dazed and Confused, Polite Society
