John Cena is somehow still one of the biggest draws on the WWE roster, even though he’s retired. That’s why the company has figured out any way to use him, and that will continue with his appearance at tonight’s (Sat., May 9, 2026) Backlash premium live event in Tampa, Florida.
He’ll be making some kind of historic announcement, one none of us have any real clue about (proof that here) beyond obvious hints that it’s something related to Club WWE. The idea that TKO would be using Cena for another money grab has some fans a bit antsy, and rightfully so. There may be some hope, however.
At least that’s the WrestleVotes word going around backstage at Friday Night SmackDown this week:
Ah, hope. As a certain Architect once said, “it is the quintessential human delusion, simultaneously the source of your greatest strength, and your greatest weakness.” I also can’t help but read that and instantly change it in my own mind to “there’s hope WWE isn’t on their bullshit again,” which feels like a wider statement on the state of the promotion itself right now.
Anyway, here’s to hoping they actually deliver later on this evening.
