The New York Times reveal Beyoncé was not included in their “Greatest Living American Songwriters” list because she is more of a “curator”

Kanye West is a vile Nazi but comparing his contributions to a song to Beyonce shows these people have no idea what they’re talking about. Yes he famously uses ghostwriters but he also famously writes lyrics and is one of the best beat makers of all time and changes the sound of hip-hop

Beyonce has camps of songwriters writing music for her and beats being made. She makes tweaks but those tweaks aren’t anything close to the contributions Kanye make to a song

The fact that what I wrote is very very very common knowledge makes whatever that whole video is not credible at all

Beyoncé isn’t a songwriter and that’s ok, she’s still an incredible entertainer.

Beyonce should not have been included, as she employs a massive team of writers that make her music happen.

Instead they should be responding as to why they left off Lady Gaga, a person who literally has written every single song she’s ever released and was the first-ever recipient of the Songwriter’s Hall of Fame Contemporary Icon Award.

i agree with this even as a beyoncé fan i’ve been saying this for years. beyoncé is absolutely more of a curator and visionary than a traditional songwriter at this point. she has an insane eye for concept, aesthetic, and assembling the right team of writers and producers to execute her vision, but she’s rarely the one sitting there crafting full songs from scratch like a carly rae jepsen or adele type. she walks in with a theme (black history, house music, country, whatever), picks the best collaborators, tweaks some lyrics, adds her flair and killer delivery, then packages it all into this massive cultural moment. that’s curator behavior. insanely good at it, don’t get me wrong renaissance and cowboy carter are masterpieces of curation but let’s not act like she’s some bedroom pop genius writing every bar herself. she’s the ceo of the album, not always the main architect.

*Yo, Beyonce, I’m really happy for you, I’mma let you finish, but Stevie Nicks had one of the best song catalogs of all time!*

    6. There were a ton of hilarious omissions but Beyoncé wasn’t one of them. Love her, but calling her more of a curator than a writer is spot on

Love Beyoncé. But if you consistently need 5+ songwriters for one song (and as many as 10+) then your speciality isn’t song writing and that’s okay.

I think most people who follow her process would agree with this. She’s a great collaborator/curator that brings out an amazing final product.

There was a producer interview that also discussed her love for the post production process. She’s very engaged artist who can work across multiple teams to execute her vision.

These lists are getting so predictable and pathetic. It’s all for clicks. “Legacy news source  X puts out list of top Y best whatever” and then they leave out someone that people LOVE and hope that people argue about it in the comments. Yawn. Beyoncé, the writer of Lemonade, doesn’t care and neither do I.

I mean, this is an objective fact but her fans still won’t like it. She ended Keri Hilson’s career because she blindsidingly stole her songwriting credits, and Keri dared speak up about it.

    11. She’s been called out bt many famous songwriters for stealing credits so yeah

I love Beyoncé but come on… we all know most of her music isn’t written by her and that’s ok.

Some of the people on the list have songs I’ve never heard of. Not saying what they’ve written isn’t enjoyable to someone, but the reach is questionable. Someone else on this list probably also uses the same writing room, ghost writers situation, but I guess we’re carving out a special for Beyonce. (Not saying she needs to be on the list, just apply the same logic all around.)

I don’t think anyone besides Stans were arguing about her not being included.

Many musicians never wrote their own stuff. Whitney Houston and Celine Dion. They don’t have song writing credits on their biggest hits.

      They’re still legends.
