I was also curious about his tweet. He tweeted three horrible things in 2012. There’s no excuse. That’s exactly how he apologised in 2016: he didn’t excuse his behaviour, instead he 100% blamed himself and said he was wrong. [What he said was wrong, of course, but he did take accountability for it.](https://www.theguardian.com/football/2016/aug/20/andre-gray-apologises-homophobic-tweet-gay)
And when someone addressed it 7 years later, he did not fight them, did not deny it and did not ignore it. Instead he acknowledged that he’s a product of his own upbringing and that he took control of educating himself so it would never happen again.
Yes, what he wrote is absolutely horrible. But as someone coming from a horrible upbringing, with racist parents… some people, who were raised by such parents, make mistakes that most of you could never imagine. We need to be taught to think differently, and for many that learning curve starts when we’re already an adult. I never wrote the things he did and I cannot imagine doing so, but I definitely had to unlearn the horrible things that my parents taught me. I was just lucky that my learning curve started when I was still a teenager.
