I’ll probably get criticized for this, but this is my opinion and I’m not forcing anyone to believe it ,everyone is free to believe whatever they want. In my opinion, if God gives us a gender, there is a reason for it. If gender were something that could simply be chosen freely, then why would God give us characteristics that distinguish us from one another? There wouldn’t be anything at birth indicating what we are; we would just make the choice ourselves
