Angelina Jolie plays Mother Gothel, all warmth on the surface and cold calculation underneath, a woman who stole a child for the magic in her hair and spent eighteen years convincing that child the world outside was too dangerous to survive without her. Every line she delivers sounds like love and functions like a lock. Then Ryan Gosling’s Flynn Rider climbs through the window of the one place he absolutely did not expect anyone to be living, charming and self-interested and completely unprepared for a girl who has been waiting her whole life for exactly this kind of accident. The deal they strike is practical on paper and something else entirely in practice. The tower gets smaller the moment she leaves it. The world gets larger than anything Gothel ever let her imagine. And the lights she has painted on her walls every year are waiting somewhere out there across the water, belonging to a story about who she actually is that nobody ever told her.

Eight to ten hours on this one. Getting the balance between Rapunzel’s wonder and Gothel’s quiet menace to coexist in the same trailer took real patience. Went deep into the source material from the ground up. Multiple tools, multiple passes. Every frame felt worth it.
