Finish Your Songs: The 4 Questions I Ask to Get Unstuck

Inspiration is generous, but it gives us fragments. It might come as a feeling, a phrase, a mood, or a melody. Inspiration gives us something that feels important, but doesn’t yet have shape.

This gap between inspiration and an actual song is where many of us writers get stuck.

In this video, I want to share four steps that help writers move from vague concepts to completed songs. We’ll look at emotional tone, lyric perspective, tension, story timeline, and point of view as tools for bringing your concept into focus.

The goal isn’t to have inspiration to give you all the answers. It’s to be able to start with any idea, no matter how big or small, confidently commit to it, and finish the song.

    We’ll talk about:
    • how emotional “quadrants” shape musical choices
    • why it’s important to look at where the singer is standing in the story
    • how contrast creates tension in songwriting
    • why point of view changes the emotional impact of a lyric
    • how to gently narrow a concept until the song begins to reveal itself

If you’ve been carrying around unfinished song ideas for months, or years, I hope this gives you a clearer path forward.

    ✅ Lesson Highlights:

00:00 Start: Why Inspiration Isn’t the Song
    01:35 Finding the Emotional Quadrant
03:00 Where Is the Singer Standing?
04:25 The Tension That Drives the Song
05:40 Testing Different Points of View
06:50 Giving the Song Somewhere to Stand
