      Justice for Zola!!!

I didn’t finish Anora bc I found it boring so I can’t say too much about that movie.

Had the delight of seeing Annapurna Sriram‘s debut feature film at NewFest last year. Highly recommend for the humor, vision, and refusal to condescend.

      Seriously, where’s Zola?
Glad Modern Whore got a mention though, it’s fabulous!

I feel vindicated because I never understood the Anora success. It was such a shallow and boring movie but people praised it to no end!

I love how in the post itself it says “It received negative feedback from the sex worker community mostly for the way it played off the violence they face as comedy” but they still included it 🙄

I really don’t like how this movie became the mainstream go-to movie about sex work for this generation, especially given the guy behind it.

I would never pin Anora for a SW film. And yes I agree it was really bad I couldn’t finish it.

Out of genuine curiosity, how do sex workers feel about tangerine and Florida project?

    9. How Anora won those Oscar’s I’ll never know. Bunch of weirdo male Academy voters I guess.

    10. My comment was second on the actual post lol.

tangerine is on my off beat Christmas movies list. Also wild to me that they wrote about Anora with “despite criticism from sex workers, these actors were great in the movie!”

Damn why doesn’t my content as a sex worker get the same review? “Despite criticism from SWERFs, my eyes looked really pretty in this one!”

anora hate is unjustified (to me) and goes to show how people contain art in their lives. but anora isn’t a story about a sex worker, it just happens that anora is a sex worker. the story revolves around what it means to hope on a dream that isn’t real and almost impossible to come true. her world crashes in mere minutes after believing it could work out. if we view this movie as something for and about sex workers than of course you will be disappointed. AND might I suggest watching movies in theaters and not at home. it is a cinematic experience that needs you to be out of your own world to dive into a world like anora.

Anora was bad but they did consult actual SWers for it. One of them, Andrea Werhun, just released her own documentary, Modern Whore, which is really good.

As a sex worker of over a decade I find all the representation of us incredibly tokenistic and sheer self aggrandising by directors and actors thinking they’re doing the community a favour. It’s so performative and yawn inducing.

Honestly my favorite movie about sex work is Fucktoys. If you have a chance to see it go check it out !

i’m so glad to find ppl who also hated this dogshit movie. Anora was so shallow. I have no idea how it won an oscar.

Zola was so good but as a fan of the thread when it dropped I was hoping for more at the end. It was a great adaption of the thread lol. Was surreal to see it realised in such a perfect way

As a long time dancer, Anora was a terrible watch. Sean Baker’s first film, Starlet, is actually a much more nuanced portrayal of a sex worker…I feel like Baker leaned hard into sensationalism and caricature because he knew that’s what would get him an award. Anora (the character) was way too dumb to have been a sex worker as long as she had. Anyone in her position would have known not to fall for something like that.

Men need to stop making stories about sex workers (unless they are a sex worker or it’s about male sex workers) and instead hand the camera to women. There are still way too few women and trans people behind the camera. Euphoria sucks now. Anora sucked.

I am loving the AppleTV show with Elle Fanning though.

    18. Fuck Toys was GREAT! I loved it when I saw it at the Femme Filth Festival.
