Maldives Diving Tragedy: Excursion Leaves 5 Dead | E! News

A devastating tragedy has shaken the Maldives after four Italian divers and their instructor vanished during a deep-sea cave expedition. The group disappeared on May 14 while exploring an underwater cave near Vaavu Atoll, reaching depths of nearly 165 feet. The body of instructor Gianluca Benedetti was found near the cave entrance the same day, while the remaining divers—ecology professor Monica Montefalcone, her daughter Giorgia, researcher Muriel Oddenino, and marine ecology graduate Federico Gualtieri—were discovered dead inside the cave four days later following an intense multinational recovery effort. The rescue mission itself turned tragic when a Maldivian military diver died from decompression sickness while assisting in the search. Officials say the dive may have exceeded Maldives’ legal recreational diving depth limits while using standard recreational equipment instead of specialized technical gear. In response, the Maldives Ministry of Tourism and Civil Aviation suspended the license of the dive boat operated by Italian tour company Albatros, as investigators work to determine what went wrong.
