We Took a $30,000 Luxury Japanese Cruise – We Are Americans
We took a luxury cruise through Japan with 450 Japanese guests and it was unlike any cruise we’ve ever taken. Heidi and I sailed on a Japanet cruise aboard Viking Yi Dun, a 10-night all-inclusive voyage that combined the comfort of a Viking Ocean ship with an entirely unique cultural experience designed for Japanese travelers. We are Americans, and this is what it was like. This incredible journey showcases what makes these cruise reviews so positive. 😎🛳️

🇯🇵 WHAT IS A JAPANET CRUISE?
Japanet doesn’t own ships. Instead, they charter vessels from cruise lines you already know, and for this sailing they used Viking Yi Dun (formerly Viking Sun). What sets a Japanet cruise apart is the original programming layered on top: curated shore excursions, onboard cultural activities, local sake and shochu tastings, Kabuki performances, Mizuhiki and origami classes, and a daily Japanet newsletter alongside the Viking Daily. It’s a fully curated 15-day Japan land and sea experience from the moment you arrive.
🏯 PORTS OF CALL AND SHORE EXCURSIONS
We visited regions of Japan that most Americans have never even heard of. Every port included an upgraded shore excursion led by the same English-speaking guide, Saito, for the entire voyage. In Kamakura, we explored Tsurugaoka Hachimangu, Japan’s most important Shinto shrine, and the serene bamboo garden at Hokokuji Temple. In the Fuji region, we stood before the iconic mountain framed by cherry blossoms. We also experienced a sumo stable training session and much more across the 10 nights at sea.
🍶 WHAT’S INCLUDED
Japanet upgraded Viking’s already-generous inclusions. Everything was covered: all dining, Viking’s Silver Spirits premium beverage package (including local sakes and shochus sourced from each port), shore excursions, Wi-Fi, gratuities, and twice-daily housekeeping. Pre-cruise nights at the Intercontinental Yokohama Pier 8 and post-cruise nights at Hotel Chinzanso Tokyo were also part of the package. Round-trip airport transfers were included too.
🛳️ LIFE ABOARD VIKING YI DUN
The ship carries around 930 guests at full capacity, though we sailed well below that. The Scandinavian design, complimentary thermal suite, Explorers’ Lounge, Living Room bar with local sake on tap, and multiple dining venues all deliver the classic Viking experience. We stayed in a Penthouse Veranda stateroom (cabin 5028) for the voyage. Nightly entertainment ranged from Japanet-exclusive performances by Japanese singers and a Kabuki artist to Western-style shows by Viking vocalists Nick and Sophie.

This sounds perfect for my husband and I. I absolutely love Japan, and my husband even mentioned that he would like to take a cruise around Japan since he absolutely loves cruising. ❤❤❤
Totemo takai !
Wow! Incredible trip! Does any cruise company do a very similar type of upscale trip… Italy???
Since moving to Yokohama we see so many cruise ships and are interested in doing a cruise ourselves. Cruises like this would be amazing for us non-Japanese, exploring different cities while not being completely lost with the language barrier
Nothing like "dietary restrictions" to suck joy out of a holiday in east Asia.
A wonderful and thorough insight to a very unique cruise. Very well done! Thank you.
