Gemma Arterton almost joined both Marvel and DC. 👀

British actress Gemma Arterton came incredibly close to landing some of the biggest superhero roles in Hollywood. Before becoming known for movies like Clash of the Titans, Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time, Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters, and Quantum of Solace, she was considered for multiple major comic-book franchises.

She auditioned for the role of Catwoman / Selina Kyle in Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight Rises (2012), the final film in The Dark Knight trilogy starring Christian Bale as Batman. The role eventually went to Anne Hathaway, whose performance became one of the most iconic portrayals of Catwoman in DC history.

Marvel Studios also reportedly looked at Gemma Arterton for Natasha Romanoff / Black Widow in Iron Man 2 (2010), directed by Jon Favreau and starring Robert Downey Jr. as Tony Stark. The role ultimately went to Scarlett Johansson, who later became one of the biggest stars in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

She was even considered for Peggy Carter in Captain America: The First Avenger (2011), opposite Chris Evans as Steve Rogers. The role was eventually played by Hayley Atwell, whose performance became a fan-favorite across both Marvel movies and the Agent Carter series.

And in Iron Man 3 (2013), Gemma Arterton auditioned for the role of Maya Hansen, the scientist connected to the Extremis storyline. The role later went to Rebecca Hall.
