i will never understand why Patagonia isn’t absolutely delighted by the amount of free marketing Pattie does for them. like normally you’d have to pay an influencer possibly millions for wholesome health-focused content that directs people precisely to your brand.

my sister was right. I told her this was no big deal because it was just a $1 lawsuit and not to sweat it. She immediately corrected me, telling me what scumbags Patagonia were being and this was a few months ago. (She’s also a former REI employee so I feel like she has some inside track).

    3. contattomarketing on

Why would Patagonia care about this? Don’t you have more important things to attend to…like increasing shareholder value and leveraging your PR to sell overpriced vests to Silicon Valley?

    4. BuzzerWhirr on

Does Patagonia have a line of drag queen outfits? Otherwise, this seems like a shitty move and harassment on their part, since Pattie can just claim that her name is inspired by the region named in the 16th Century.

    5. Relevant-Peach3997 on

No one else is allowed to reference a geographical region? Remember when Disney tried to trademark Día de los Muertos/Day of the Dead. F these corporations.

Legally, this makes sense. If you look at Pattie’s logo, it’s very similar to Patagonia’s. Using a similar name and logo and also selling clothing (merch) does infringe on Patagonia’s trademark. If they don’t step in now, anyone else can do something similar and from a legal standpoint, someone can argue that since Patagonia didn’t defend their trademark against Pattie, they’ve abandoned it, so anyone can use their name and logo/likeness to sell clothes.

    7. Dry-Yak5277 on

Lmao imagine the audacity you have to file a trademark lawsuit about an already existing name for a region in South America

    8. wormsaremymoney on

For a company who says “We’re in business to save our home planet”, suing a climate activist is an interesting move

    9. organic_soursop on

      They should sue Argentina too.

Aren’t they supposed to be a cool company?

    10. Movingmad_2015 on

I find it so weird that the company can sue Pattie using the name of a place that’s existed millions of years before the company was even in conception.

I don’t know the exact word but it’s weird having rich white people dictate who can and can’t use the name of a large indigenous region in South America.

    11. Do none of y’all realize that if Patagonia doesn’t defend their trademark anyone can start using it? Her branded items look almost exactly like that of Patagonias.

being a climate activist doesn’t mean that climate friendly brands can’t sue you for using their logo/name? Hello?

    12. garbagechicken on

The lawsuit alleges that Pattie “appropriates Patagonia’s brand and identity in a way that has already confused consumers.” Who is baby brained enough to be confused here??

    13. hellolovely1 on

This is very disappointing. I’ve always respected Patagonia’s ethical stances and this doesn’t seem in keeping with their philosophy.

    14. Head-Inspection7907 on

For the people unfamiliar with copyright law, Patagonia is doing this because Pattie Gonia basically tried to trademark her parody version of their logo to use on clothing. In a vacuum, not a huge deal, which is (I would assume) why the suit is only for $1.

BUT copyright law is weird. If you don’t defend your trademark, it becomes real easy for it to be appropriated. If Patagonia let Pattie do this, it would open them up to any other entity doing the same thing. Imagine Ben Shapiro making parody Patagonia clothing and donating the proceeds to whatever bullshit fund actively works against these causes. If Patagonia tried to sue them, Ben could go to court with the defense that Patagonia didn’t care when Pattie did it, so why do they care now? And as dumb as it is, those defenses have legal precedence in court.

GFY Patagonia. If for nothing else than asking $300+ for a puffer jacket.

    16. The favored vest brand of finance bros. Why am i not surprised the actual company sucks too.

    17. To her point, this is suspiciously timed given her LGBT fundraising. Seeing people in other subs (popculturechat always doing what it does) bootlicking for a company when parody allows for this is fucking obscene.

People think it’s incomprehensible for a “progressive-ish” company to be worried about this admin and all I can tell you is that if you think these people are for-real progressive I’ve got a bridge to sell you. I work for a “progressive” company. We’ve been told to tone a lot of shit down. Rule #1 is always: do what you can to make money, and look progressive when it’s convenient for your bottom line.

    18. BabeItsStillAnAd on

Anyone confusing Pattie’s merch for Patagonia’s probably also thinks Madonna sung “Like A Surgeon”

    19. Western-River1386 on

They’re gonna lose a lot more than $1 million at the end of all this

    20. Fleetwood_Spac on

Patagonia is a region of South America. How can a company claim ownership of that name to begin with?

    21. SiempreRegreso on

She should change her name to what they call it in Silicon Valley: Patagucci.

    22. Alternative_Cap_8444 on

Right?? Like she is literally their dream customer turned unpaid brand ambassador. Patagonia out here picking beef with the one celeb whose whole shtick is “I love nature and functional clothes” instead of like… letting her frolic in fleece in peace 💀

    23. How were they even able to trademark a region in the first place is what I want to know

    24. miss_sonnenschein on

Respectfully, I beg of all of you to do some actual research before you comment on this. Like…yeah corporations suck, but in this specific incidence Pattie slightly sucks too.

Patagonia gave Pattie *multiple* warnings. Pattie *agreed* to refrain from selling PATTIE GONIA-branded products or designs that copy, or are substantially similar to, Patagonia’s logos. This is NOT because of their name, and entirely because they are trying to sell clothing (some of them even directly referenced hiking, I think?) under the PATTIE GONIA brand. Which…obviously and directly competes with Patagonia’s brand.

Pattie has been a drag queen for nearly a decade, they have nearly 2 million follows on insta and they have a prior relationship with Patagonia. They were incredibly silly to have done this and not expected this response. Patagonia has to protect their trademark or it’ll weaken their future cases.

Hopefully they’ll be able to argue that it falls under parody, though.

    25. Dry_Educator_691 on

I have never disliked anything they have ever done until this moment

    26. bobbitsholiday on

Pattie is my favorite Queen right now. This action by Patagonia is disgusting. I am rooting for her.

    27. velvetswing on

I thought Patagonia was a good brand, I promoted them to loved ones. Never again.
