Erin Moriarty: My Public Battle With Graves’ Disease Nearly Destroyed Me | “I was going through the physical hell of chronic illness on a public stage. Doing it in private is emotionally damaging enough, but to have my physical symptoms be speculated about, trivialized, & dismissed was devastating.”
> I hope the transparency surrounding my symptoms can help even one person catch their illness earlier than I caught mine. The body speaks long before it screams. Listen to yourself before your body is forced to scream loud enough for the world to hear it, too.

Everyone was so horrible to her saying she had a million things done to her face, even if she did why is it anyone’s business?? Really happy to see her healing

I love her for pushing back and speaking out about what she’s been going through! You could tell her health was getting better as the last season of The Boys progressed. She was absolutely radiant in the last episode. I so look forward to her next venture! 🥰

Graves’ is awful. I have multiple chronic illnesses, but that one was the scariest. Literally- I was always so anxious, heart pounding, brain wouldn’t shut off. And that’s the tip of the iceberg. Wishing her all the best.

I have Graves so I understand her symptoms all too well. I was diagnosed as a teen and opted to treat with medication. The good thing is, this can give you years of remission. The bad thing is, you can come out of remission and require treatment again. When you treat with medication, it can take years for your thyroid to stabilize. Your other options are a thyroidectomy or treatment with radioactive iodine to kill your thyrod (RAI is most common in the US). These remove the *object* of your autoimmune dysfunction, but not the antibodies.
I mention this as Erin said that her thyroid *caused* her Graves. The opposite is true. Graves attacks your thyroid. This is important because even in remission or without a thyroid you will have autoimmune antibodies and they can still affect you. I have been in remission for years (meaning I have normal thyroid function without any medication), but the antibodies still affect me in other ways. For example, I have chronic hives which is not uncommon with Graves. My sister has thyroid eye disease though she also has normal thyroid function (and also has Graves).
Autoimmune diseases are a bitch and can be difficult to diagnose, treat, and manage. I have experienced so much lack of understanding about my condition and how to treat it properly. You have to become your own advocate which can be such a burden when you are met with doctors who don’t believe/understand you but also act all-knowing and treat you like you’re crazy or making shit up.
I feel for Erin. I hope her treatment is helping her and that she stays vigilant about monitoring her health and finding practitioners who listen and support her.

I have Graves, and I went through so many physical changes because of it. I had someone ask me if I did surgery because of my bulging eyes. My hands were so weak at some point i could not hold a pencil. Then when I went on medication I gained 10 kg in 2 months, plus a whole bunch of other health issue (diabetes, high cholesterol). Luckily all these physical changes happened during covid when I did not have to face anyone.

I really feel for her as someone w chronic illness myself. I can’t imagine how hard it must have been going through all that PLUS having the whole internet speculating about you.

I think there’s also something to said for her being in the public eye of specifically the fandom of The Boys, which is kind of a notorious cesspit

And yet the boys fans were accusing her of having an ED and making fun of it

Not the main point, but I thought the image was of aunt Becky’s daughter!
