John Oliver’s brutal takedown of a U.S. healthcare manager who made the Last Week Tonight host want to “punch a hole in the wall” has been protected by law.

U.S. District Judge Ronnie Abrams, who was appointed by President Barack Obama, dismissed a defamation suit brought against Oliver, 49, by the subject of one of his HBO show’s “scathing critiques” on Tuesday.

The win maintains Last Week Tonight’s perfect record against defamation lawsuits intact.

    2. > “People have bowel movements every day where they don’t completely clean themselves, and we don’t fuss too much,” Morley says about a patient in the audio testimonial shown in the segment, drawing an audible gasp from the audience. “People are allowed to be dirty… You know, I would allow him to be dirty for a couple of days.”

Yeah, when the person being “defamed” just straight up says this in a testimony, it’s pretty understandable why his suit would be dismissed.

John Oliver is next on the hit list.

Soon we won’t have voices like his who stick up for all of us.

      >Morley claimed that Oliver had “feigned outrage” at him “for ratings and profits.”

Buddy, that is pretty much our entire media landscape right now.

    5. John’s content is throughly vetted by HBO’s legal team before it is aired. They are very good at their jobs! Everything is always airtight to safeguard against any lawsuits. Bring it!

    6. He runs every story by some of the best entertainment lawyers in the business. He’s not going to lose these lawsuits.

    7. imagine literally being called out on your bullshit and your only recourse is to file a defamation suit. How trumpian of him

    8. Snow flake has his widdle feefees hurt and sues. These lawsuits will continue until one court agrees. And then it will be a flood of them.

I continue to be so impressed that comedians who became actors or stayed in comedy like Stewart, Conan, Meyers persisted so that they could create homes for peers like Oliver, Noah & Josh Johnson to truly fight the power and come into their own individually and together. It’s great to see each and all of them continue to receive critical awards across entertainment AND journalism in the age where the Murdoch Family & others exploit journalism as entertainment and the policy of entertainment to systemically dismantle the institution and profession that is (was?) journalism. Lenny Bruce, Dick Gregory and other comedic ancestors would be proud.

It’s weird to me that fox news and Co can basically say whatever they want and colbert, fallon and John Oliver get sued to death and cancelled. Other than the voting machines, are their similar lawsuits and we just don’t see them? I don’t understand.

Aww, bb. You thought we didn’t hate you? Read the room!!

They think playing someone’s own words, recorded on tape, constitutes “defamation?”

That guy wins Emmys for breakfast. Any network would be an idiot to turn down any show of his and they know this.

Unless they don’t like money, prestige or awards.

He has the eyeballs. They is nothing that trumps that. Not even Trump.

We are literally watching the Republican Party attempt to turn America into Russia as far as politics go. All you need to do is read what their policies are and watch their takeover of everything. Social media/ legacy media. They think they can force feed us their hatred and bullshit. I’ll never vote for another one again.

I can’t remember the exact interview but Oliver was discussing his view on defamation lawsuits being “my view is that when we get sued I want to be able to win”. HBO’s view is that they don’t want to be sued. I’m glad that his ethos is winning.

It’s a sign of a countrys inevitable downfall when comedy shows and youtubers do the best investigative reporting.

I fucking love John Oliver. A national hero from the UK – as American as it gets.

    18. He’s a national treasure. It’s staggering that he, Jon Stewart, Stephen Colbert, Steve Carrell, Samantha Bee, and Ed Helms were once all on the same the same show at the same time. We owe a lot to The Daily Show.

John has said time and time again they have a team of lawyers looking at everything they say. It’s all scripted and the script is checked multiple times to make it so lawsuits like this never stick. Their legal team does an amazing job keeping them bulletproof.

How can this doctor’s argument be Oliver faked outrage for TV? I’m sure 99% of people who heard the doctor say that felt pretty fucking outraged and disgusted too.

He’s just bringing more attention to himself with this lawsuit. Now more people who don’t watch LWT will read the article and know he’s a horrible person and doctor.

This article is about Dr Brian Morley of Iowa who thinks it’s fine to let people with cerebral palsy sit in their own shit for days at a time.
