Actor Anthony Head, best known for his roles in Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Ted Lasso, has died at the age of 72.

The British star was best known as librarian Rupert Giles in the US supernatural TV series starring Sarah Michelle Gellar, which ran from 1997 to 2003.

A statement from his daughters, actresses Emily and Daisy Head, to the Press Association, said: “It is with heavy hearts that we announce the death of our extraordinary father, Anthony Head.

“He passed away peacefully of complications due to pneumonia, surrounded by his family. It has been, and forever will be, an honour and a privilege to be his daughters, and to have witnessed first-hand the impact both he and his work have had on so many.”

In less than a year and a half we lost Dawn, Xander, and now Giles.

What the fuck? Just horrible to hear. Will have to belt some Repo in his honor.

    4. Wait, so he was like…my age…when he was playing Giles.

The old wise man with all the answers.

      Damn

His performance in Repo! The Genetic Opera is honestly one of my favorite of all time even if the writing and movie outside the music has flaws. He was such a good spirit and person in real life. He will truly be mourned

      Oh man this sucks.

First seen this dude as Mr Finch in Doctor Who (School Reunion is still one of my favorite episodes in scifi and he was such a good villain). Loved the rest of his filmography as well as I’ve watched it.

We lost a solid actor way too early. RIP to the lad and my thoughts go out to his daughters.

    7. Rest easy.

Sadly the more of the cast that passes on the less I want to see any attempt at a reboot or reimagining or whatever you want to call it. Not that I was really big on it anyway.

    8. RIP

The last thing I saw him in was a sitcom called Back with David Mitchell.

He seemed to be having a lot of fun in that part.

My gf is gonna be devastated.

Oh this makes me sad. And I don’t know if he has kids but I’ll be thinking of them this Father’s Day.

This makes me sad. Love him in Buffy, and he was great fun in Repo: The Genetic Opera, too.

      RIP

    11. Watched Buffy with friends every week on graduate school when it was airing and loved Giles.

It took a while to not see him as the Folgers coffee guy.

Geez, the Buffy cast is going through some big losses this past couple years.

    13. Loved to hate his character in Merlin. Rest in peace. Truly a generational actor.

“Do you like my mask? Isn’t it pretty? It raises the dead! Americans.”

      RIP, Ripper.

    15. Sarah Michelle is probably having an extremely difficult time right now. RIP Anthony

Thanks for making Rupert the father figure Buffy needed with the dry humour we needed

    17. Is it odd that what I know him for is gold blend coffee “will they fuck?” Ads?

“To forgive is an act of compassion. It’s not done because people deserve it, it’s done because they need it.”

      That line changed my life.
