Kane Parsons, the 20-year-old director of ‘Backrooms,’ is “absolutely not” going to embrace Al, explaining that he doesn’t “see the value in, like, outsourcing” the making of art.

I had no idea he was only 20 that’s insane. But I’m excited to see what he does in the future and he’s 100% correct here.

    2. Love to see it. He is one more person that has inspired me to create the art I have felt wouldn’t be worth it.

LOVE his explanation of his reasoning. They can’t even argue with it

Good take. Captures what I feel too. He seems very grounded for a 20 year old and I truly hope for the best for him. It’s crazy because I have a younger brother who’s a fan and he’s a few years older than him. Anyone younger than my brother feels like a baby to me lol but I really do hope he’s able to stay true to his pursuits and that there are more opportunities given to young people like this.

I slightly have hope that younger generation are gonna topple AI in some capacity

The joy of creation is in the creating. Its in the flow state, the imagination and play. AI is skips all of the joy of creation. It skips the process and learning.

Its pretty heartening to see more and more of gen z distancing themselves from ai, despite that being counter to the trend of new tech adoption.

    8. The kids are gonna be alright. Our part as oldies will be to rally around and support them!

    9. That man could be my son and I would not have even been a teen mom. Hate that.

I really want to see the return of practical effects. Building destroyed by a fire? Build a tiny balsa wood building and strike a match. Sound effects out of ordinary noises captured on a tape recorder. Etc.

    11. Just a reminder if you’d like to/able to support indie films- his film, Backrooms is still in theaters.

I personally enjoyed the film- it has two incredible actors that are really giving it their all, and I love psychological horror, so this film was right up my alley. I hope we still see movies like this made in the future – weird, independent, autuer. Plus (if anyone cares) I thought it was pretty funny that a small budget film with a cast of about 6 actors managed to pass the Bechdel test lol

Kane was like 15 when he did the original Backrooms web series! He started filmmaking a few years earlier. It’s incredible.

He’s a good egg. So talented. I’m looking forward to watching his work and career.

Horror/thrillers is where great filmmaking is at (and has always been)! Acknowledge horror, you Academy cowards!

    13. I hope big studios start to realize that people are wanting to see original movies. I’m so tired of seeing remakes of the same movies over and over. If they just invested in talented people with original ideas and took some risks, the money would roll in.

    14. Dude gets it.

Art is literally all we have that separates us from the rest of life.

It is entirely frivolous but at the same time we are existentially dependent on its creation and experience. Art is manipulating the real world and giving it *form* through experience and craft to represent your soul. It is a grasp at immortality through aesthetic. You can see pottery and toys from 150 generations ago from people from a culture and place that have been disappeared by time and connect to the hands that made it on a deep and more importantly **only** on a human level. You can see a painting and impose on your consciousness and ponder how they might have lived, that they came to make that painting. It evokes the soul to *be another* for a moment and find their humanity and maybe connect it to your own. Art is fundamentally community, experienced entirely within.

You aren’t going to like *all* art, that’d be weird. But finding that one piece of music, that one masterwork painting, or coming across a strange statue or monument to something that makes you feel seen through an inanimate object is catharsis.

AI robs you of that in lieu of easy symbols, referencing a real thing that is morphed and **stolen** because paying people for their labor is apparently a step too far. I think that’s the poison pill that rubs me the wrong way. I’ve never heard of anyone claiming to be ethical AI because their data sets are all poisoned by harvesting and stealing real art and experience and spitting out soulless simulacra.

Fun fact, he gets it because his father worked at Telltale Games in vfx until the studio was shut down and he was laid off, so support for the arts has always been in his home 🙂
