taking social media off of my phone was so good for my mental health. I’m sure people will be normal about this headline

She isn’t wrong.
I deleted most social media and I struggle to keep up with what is going on in my community. Everything is done on social media and not email/real mail, or even websites anymore.

I love how everyone just didn’t read the article and just the headline lol. She’s talking about indie artists who rely on social media exposure 💀

since no one reads:
While Roan herself has safeguards in place to keep her grounded, she acknowledges the difficulty musical artists, including herself, face when separating “social media and your job and being a good person.”
“It all is kind of wrapped up in numbers and comments, so it’s such a difficult world to navigate that personally, if I just delete it and keep it moving, I kind of make it out of that hurricane,” Roan said.
“But that’s hard for a lot of artists, because if you really rely on social media to fuel your momentum, that can be really disheartening, and it can feel very hopeless,” Roan added. “I’m in a very privileged position where I can be like ‘I’m not going to be on this,’ and I’ll be fine. But not everyone is like that.”

She’s right. So much of being successful these days is being good at shamelessly marketing yourself on social media platforms, whether it’s your art, book, music, etc.

Yeah, shes right
I know a lot of musicians in my local city (I’ve slept with too many of them) and if you want to do it for a living, you can’t do it without social media
There’s alot of pressure on women to be sexual and a lot of pressure on men to be basically, comedians to promote their art
It’s very cynical all around but I’m glad she’s keeping it real

She’s so right. I desperately want to delete socials but I’m a working drag queen and can’t unless I never want another gig again. It’s miserable. Chefs, tattoos artists, restaurant owners, now have to also be good at social media. No one signed up for how aggressively marketing has changed.

I’m happy she’s able to step away from social media. It’s such a toxic environment, and it sucks that so many industries have made it a necessary part of their marketing.Â
