We hosted our first Periods & Ponytails event with the amazing FluxxBox – Grace Gordon

Periods shouldn’t be a mum topic, they’re a parenting topic. A daughter who knows her dad won’t flinch or hand the conversation over to mum is a daughter who hopefully grows up with a positive outlook on men.

Dads are the first example of how a man can show up for her. The big takeaway (there were many!) was that as a dad you don’t need all the answers, just to be willing to sit through the moments that make you feel uncomfortable & stay anyway.

      She’ll never forget it

I absolutely love that this is a thing! I think it’s one of those topics for the daughter and father that still can be a bit awkward to talk about, so giving the Dads more education on the topic can help tremendously. I think embracing the topic vs not maybe understanding or knowing what to do or say will help a ton for these guys.

I want a pint and ponytails event in my city. My daughter has started asking me to learn how to braid her hair.

    4. this makes me so emo for some reason. what a gift to have a parent that’s this caring and locked in.

It was honestly such a relief growing up and having a dad I could ask to get me period products. He’d always act disgusted and not want to hear about my actual period but had no issue buying whatever I needed.

One of the best things from my childhood was Indian Princesses

It’s kind of like girl scouts but it’s girls and their dads. I think it’s been rebranded.

Weekly meetings and outings and badge earning and every meeting and event is the girl and their dad with their “tribe” made of other girls and their dads

imagine if mothers had to be bribed with alcohol to learn something so basic.

These dads are so attractive, I don’t care what they look like. More men like this!!

This made me emotional. My father would refuse to talk about any period/womanhood related topics and acted like it was disgusting.

I grew up in a traditional/religious 2 parent household, and I can still remember when my younger sister shouted from the bathroom “DAD IM BLEEDING!” and my dad freaking out thinking she cut herself accidentally. I was a nosy little egg, so I overheard the conversation.

My dad is an imperfect person. He’s got blind spots and failings. But I’ll never forget him calmly talking to her through the bathroom door (once he figured out what was going on), explaining where my mom kept the pads, and him having her hand her clothes out to be washed and bringing her new ones. He described where to place the pad as “where there’s a shadow if you’re standing with a spotlight over you”.

He didn’t make a fuss about it, didn’t embarrass her and then after things had settled down he took us to Dairy Queen. I still look back on that one and think “you’re a real one for that dad”.

    11. I’m grateful this exists as a daughter to a single dad who had no idea how to help me and just got angry when I didn’t know what to do either haha

I’m glad to see this sort of thing, honestly. I could probably find a reason to not pick it, but kudos to these guys for showing up and being ready to learn and trying to overcome b the discomfort they may feel about periods, especially as it relates to their kid. Kudos to the women who lead these groups and teach men matter of fact and without making them feel dumb for not knowing what they were never taught. Men and women both benefit from this sort of education. I hate seeing women and girls struggle and suffer through their period every month, having to keep the blood that drips out of them from leaking into their clothes and still go about their day as if everything is fine. I don’t like men being depicted as bumbling imbeciles who are grossed out by women’s bodies unless it’s something sexual. Men and women are so tough and resilient and we can do anything if we just care about each other and this is a huge step in bridging the gap in understanding and empathy for these men.

This is huge. I love that they’re doing this, and I love that they’re so vocal and open about doing it.

    14. This is so cool! Girls and women’s periods have been so stigmatized and taboo. For men to actually take the time and learn about what we go through is awesome. Its okay guys, you can purchase feminine products for you wife, daughter or girlfriend it doesn’t make you less of a man, it makes you more of one in our eyes.

    15. This is amazing. My husband has been wanting to learn how to do our daughters hair so he’s been watching their stuff so this just makes me even happier
