CULTURE ERASED! Greek Writer Calls Out Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey… “We Did Not Vanish!”

Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey is facing more controversy on the heels of comments by actress Lupita Nyong’o, as Greek voices who feel their culture and history are being sidelined in Hollywood’s adaptation of Homer’s legendary epic won’t sit quietly.

A powerful open letter from an anonymous Greek writer directed at Christopher Nolan and the film’s cast argues that Greece itself feels strangely absent from a story deeply tied to Greek identity, mythology, and cultural heritage.

The letter also indirectly responds to comments from Lupita Nyong’o, who stated: “This is a mythological story” and “Our cast is representative of the world.”

For many critics of the adaptation, that misses the point entirely.

Mythology is not just fantasy entertainment — it’s often inseparable from the history, traditions, and identity of the people who created it. And many fans believe Hollywood increasingly treats cultural source material as interchangeable instead of respecting the civilizations and traditions those stories came from.

As backlash continues building online, The Odyssey is quickly becoming one of the most divisive films of Nolan’s career — months before release.

    3. The word "myth" comes from the Ancient Greek word mythos (μῦθος), which originally meant "speech," "word," "story," or "narrative." It is related to the verb mytheomai, meaning "to speak" or "to tell a story."
In its earliest sense, a myth was simply a spoken account or tale.

In English, the prefix "para-" is not originally an English root; it comes from Ancient Greek and is used in many international words. It generally means "beside, beyond, parallel, auxiliary, or abnormal" depending on the context.

      English words starting with "para-":
      – paragraph = a section of writing
      – parallel = side by side, similar direction
      – paradox = a contradictory or strange idea
      – parameter = a defining limit or value
      – parachute = a device used to slow descent from the air
      – paragliding = a form of light aircraft flying using a parachute-like wing
      – paralysis = loss of muscle function or movement
      – paranoid = having irrational fears or suspicion
      – parasite = an organism that lives on or in another and benefits at its expense
      – paranormal = beyond normal scientific explanation
      – paraphrase = to express the same idea in different words
      – paralegal = a legal assistant who supports lawyers
      – paramedic = a healthcare professional who provides emergency care
      – paratrooper = a soldier trained to parachute into operations
      – paramount = of the highest importance

In Greek, there is the word “paramythi” (παραμύθι), which comes from “para” and “mythos.” It is used when we want to describe something as a story or claim that is not true, something fictional or false.

In Greek, there is a clear difference between the words “myth” (μύθος) and “fairy tale” (παραμύθι).

A “myth” originally refers to an ancient spoken narrative or traditional story that was passed down orally through generations. Myths were often used to preserve and transmit historical events, cultural memory, and explanations of the world as understood in ancient times. In other words, a myth is a traditional account of events, beliefs, or histories from the distant past, usually involving gods, heroes, or symbolic meaning.

On the other hand, the word “paramythi” (παραμύθι), which comes from “para” and “mythos,” is used in modern Greek to describe a fairy tale or fictional story. It is commonly used to refer to imaginative or made-up narratives, and in everyday language it can also imply that something is not true or is just a story.

Mythology ( Μύθος + λόγος ) is the collection and study of traditional myths, stories, and legends that explain the beliefs, culture, and worldview of a people.

To truly understand the meaning of words, you need to know and experience the language they belong to.

    4. Cosa direbbero gli Americani se mettessimo i Greci nella storia Americana 😂 e solo mitologia dai possiamo fare anche George Washington Nero 😂😂😂
Non credo che gli americani andrebbero al cinema a vedere George Washington Nero 😂😂

    5. Troy was a real city in history, Helen was a real woman in history, and Achilles was a real warrior in Greek history, and Greek historians and history books can prove this.

    6. Great explanation! Great channel, from what I’ve seen. Keep up the awesome work. On a side note, what do you think of the movie “Oh Brother, Where Art Thou” which was based on The Odessey, but set in a very different time frame?

    7. "Everybody needs to start practicing with certain things🪖🧹🥁🪈🎻🎤🔔🎼🔊🪓⚔️🔫🪃🏹🛡🦯⛓️⛓️‍💥🧬🔭📡💉🩸🩹🩼🪞🧷🪤🧯, as soon as you can. No, I'm not really joking all that much"

    8. The story itself is a myth, but the war and the cities were actually real. To dismiss it as pure mythology shows how ignorant Hollywood is.

    9. We, the Greeks or better Hellenes, have been teached about Greek mythology and history since the age of seven years old! It is part of our DNA! Hollywood is being racist against Greek nation to gain money and fame. They would better respect us or create their own stories! Don't mess with our heritage!
      Thanks for the support!
