A powerful open letter from an anonymous Greek writer directed at Christopher Nolan and the film’s cast argues that Greece itself feels strangely absent from a story deeply tied to Greek identity, mythology, and cultural heritage.
The letter also indirectly responds to comments from Lupita Nyong’o, who stated: “This is a mythological story” and “Our cast is representative of the world.”
For many critics of the adaptation, that misses the point entirely.
Mythology is not just fantasy entertainment — it’s often inseparable from the history, traditions, and identity of the people who created it. And many fans believe Hollywood increasingly treats cultural source material as interchangeable instead of respecting the civilizations and traditions those stories came from.
As backlash continues building online, The Odyssey is quickly becoming one of the most divisive films of Nolan’s career — months before release.

The story itself is a myth, but the war and the cities were actually real. To dismiss it as pure mythology shows how ignorant Hollywood is.
We, the Greeks or better Hellenes, have been teached about Greek mythology and history since the age of seven years old! It is part of our DNA! Hollywood is being racist against Greek nation to gain money and fame. They would better respect us or create their own stories! Don't mess with our heritage!
