Professor Utonium was trying to make the perfect children and the accident that changed everything happened the way the most important things always happen — quietly, in a lab late at night, with nobody watching. Mads Mikkelsen plays the Professor with the particular warmth of a precise man who was not prepared for how completely three little girls would rearrange every priority he had, raising Blossom, Bubbles, and Buttercup behind closed doors and trying to give them something that resembles normal while Chemical X pulses in their blood and Townsville keeps presenting problems that normal was never equipped to handle. Amanda Seyfried’s Blossom leads with composed precision, red ponytail and pink dress and a seriousness that sits older than her years. Elle Fanning’s Bubbles carries soft blue eyes and a stuffed octopus clipped to her belt and a sweetness that hits considerably harder than anyone who underestimates her ever expected. Kristen Stewart’s Buttercup has her sleeves pushed up and her expression permanently set to mildly unimpressed and her fists already moving before the conversation finishes. Keanu Reeves plays HIM with the unnervingly still presence of something ancient that has been pulling Townsville’s strings from between dimensions long before the girls existed, pale-skinned and dark-eyed and dressed in black military precision. Charlize Theron’s Sedusa moves through the Professor’s life with serpentine grace and auburn hair that strikes like a weapon, serving HIM’s plan until the girls discover the truth and the final battle becomes personal in every direction at once.

Nine to eleven hours on this one. Getting three completely distinct sisters to each feel fully realized inside one trailer took serious character work. Multiple tools, multiple full passes. Every Chemical X pulse earned.
