Cape Verde’s 40 yo goalkeeper Vozinha gained 7.1 million followers in just one day after his sensational performance against Spain in their 0–0 draw. He had only 50k followers yesterday

Vozinha is the oldest goalkeeper to keep a clean sheet in his World Cup debut and just the second goalkeeper aged 40 or older to make at least seven saves in a World Cup match since 1966

How do notifications work on such a huge surge in followers?

Followed him last night! He had such a great game and a sad backstory. It’s amazing how he at 40 years old held a clean sheet against Spain!

Holy shit. That’s quite jump.
I wonder if his IG crashed trying to process all those notifications.

My other fave Cape Verde story is that they’ve got an Irish player called Roberto “Pico” Lopes who was working in a bank and playing semi pro then went pro and signed for Shamrock Rovers
He got a message on Linkedin from the then coach of the Cape Verde national team in Portuguese asking if he was interested in joining the team (cos his dad was from there) but ignored it for months cos he thought it was the usual LinkedIn spam- then the coach messaged again in English “have you considered this proposal?”. Pico google translated it, was like hell yeah and now he’s the only Irish person since 2002 to be at a World Cup (Declan rice doesn’t count)

Too bad his mom wasn’t able to watch it live because of Visa issues.

Most watched event in the world. Funny that some people compare it to superbowl

I don’t follow soccer but I live in an area with a large cape verdean population so I’m hyped for them.
