My grandma has the same, yes and no, it really does affect memory, but no where to the extremes as Alzheimer’s.
She’ll come in and out of it, but for the most part remembers my grandfather (who doesn’t remember her on account of Alzheimer’s) and everyone in the family. There are good days and bad days for remembering people. For the most part she just can’t speak properly and often struggles to find words. These days she mostly struggles so much she says “screw it” and gives up.

My dad is getting pretty advanced in his FTD, and definitely struggles with memory some days. MOST people he still remembers, though there a few people he has completely forgotten. The big thing is that his short term memory seems pretty bad. I broke my hand, and he asked me 3 times in the same day what I was wearing on my hand.

Yeah my FTD patients have periods of time where they are too emotional/unregulated to answer questions but outside of that they remember me from visit to visit and even ask about my kid. It’s a frustrating disease and definitely distinct from Alzheimer’s type progression.

While I respect Bruce’s privacy during this time, I appreciate the updates from the family. Particularly this one because it had initially seemed as if his memory was all but gone, that was the impression I got from the occasional update the family shared. It’s a small comfort to know he hasn’t forgotten the people he loves.

I’ve been sneaking in at night and reading him textbooks. Lol the family has no idea.
