Dracula built the hotel after he lost Martha, which means every stone of it was laid by grief and every rule inside it was written by fear dressed up as love. Keanu Reeves plays a vampire who has spent a century constructing the perfect world for his daughter and convincing himself the walls are protection rather than control, elegant and composed and quietly terrified underneath all of it in the specific way that only a parent who has already lost everything once can be. Emma Stone plays Mavis at 118 years old with large curious blue eyes and a gothic black dress and the particular restlessness of someone who has read every book about a world she has never been allowed to touch. Then Tom Holland’s Johnny finds the hotel with his worn-out backpack and his travel-pinned jacket and the complete absence of any instinct for self-preservation that leads to good camping stories and occasionally to stumbling through the hidden entrance of a monster resort on your 118th birthday. Dracula disguises him and schemes and maneuvers and does everything a thousand-year-old vampire with total control of his environment can do to manage the situation, and none of it works because the zing does not negotiate and Mavis is already looking at Johnny the way she has never looked at anything inside the hotel walls. What Dracula discovers slowly and at considerable personal cost is that the thing he was protecting her from was never humans. It was this exact feeling, the one he had with Martha, the one he has been terrified of watching his daughter experience because he already knows what losing it costs.

Eight to ten hours on this one. Getting Dracula’s emotional arc to carry genuine weight inside a story built around comedy and monster chaos took real tonal balance. Multiple tools, multiple full passes. The zing earned every frame.
