Attorneys for Luigi Mangione are withdrawing his psychiatric defense in the state murder trial in the killing of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, documents filed Thursday show.
The development comes one day after a judge said that the defense team was planning to argue that Mangione was experiencing an extreme emotional disturbance at the time of the killing.
Mangione faces eight felony charges, including second-degree murder, in connection with the fatal shooting of Thompson outside an annual investor conference in Manhattan on Dec. 4, 2024.
Mangione also faces federal stalking charges and has pleaded not guilty.

I am bummed, because I was looking forward to the prosecution having to argue that the US healthcare system would infuriate, frustrate, and depress even mentally healthy people

I’m not saying Brian Thompson deserved to die. But he worked for people who kill for money. Tens of thousands every year; denials to cancer patients, price raises for insulin, formulary changes on the fly— they all serve only one purpose: profit. And all it cost was a mountain of dead Americans.
Where is the outrage for those dead victims? Where is the outrage for Alex and Rene?

Interesting. Historically psychiatric defenses have very often been used to essentially argue a case as “look, we all know it was illegal but it was a reasonable/understandable/sympathetic thing to do.” I can see both why they would consider it and why they would drop it in this case
