the answer is yes, you put all the cards on the table, apologise for empowering the literal antichrist by naively adding your name to this, and then you start your advocacy anew, PUBLICLY.
I don’t understand why these people think they’re going to talk their way out of having been a part of a secret club of elites, especially by saying they’re doing it for the greater good.
no more secrets, no more shady conversations with elite benefactors who will absolutely outsmart you, and manipulate you for their own ends.
I honestly don’t care if any of these people recover from this, you want to be some secret elite, you go down with the secret elite, your motivations be damned.

Feels kind of silly to be raging at people who’ve been publicly active for the left for literally a decade plus each for being on a conference list. like maybe we could all pitchfork at the epstein list first then circle back later if there’s still time.

Sophia Bush posting an explanation and follow up comments ,all just in her stories, feels like she’s hoping it’ll just be a blip on everyone’s radar and it’ll just disappear.
She’s also notorious for being pretty self righteous and these messages come off that way 100%. She’s been posting about AI and needing to be involved with it more in the past year, going to conferences and pushing this women for AI grift, while completely ignoring how horrible AI and the subsequent data centers are for the environment (something she has frequently talked about in the past.)
I hate when people say don’t be mad at this thing when these other terrible things are going on. People can be annoyed trump and JD Vance are ruining our country and also be pissed she’s a hypocrite, it doesn’t have to be one or the other.
Also it’s all fuck Elon Musk but she posted her original statement and actually replied to people on X so again, hypocrite.

Secret societies like this are gross. Like, whatever the reason they decided to join is, they are willing to be part of the exclusivity and elitism attached. And nothing that is really good for humanity comes from these secret pow wows. So don’t with this bullshit.

Probably an unpopular opinion but for the work she’s advocating for, I feel like its inevitable that you’re going to engage with shitty people. I think to get the message across you unfortunately need to face the exact people who are financing and building the tech and it probably seems useless but if there are people who are willing to engage then I dont see how thats a loss? Unless I’ve missed something, I dont see how her being at that conference is an endorsement for Peter Thiel.

A lot of words and yadda and the fact of the matter is I can’t call either of them liars because I didn’t get an invite to the Illuminati meeting and they didn’t post their minutes online.
I think really what I see here is celebrities realizing that their mere association with people like this is something the public finds odious no matter the reason and they’re very uncomfortable, because they want power and influence and to be at these Eyes Wide Shut parties, but they also want us to like them and think that’s okay

It feels to me they’re both missing the point that the GP is done with backdoor deals and lack of transparency around the elite who supposedly advocate on behalf of the non elite. Your class is no longer trusted and the barrier you need to clear for GP support is higher because again, the elite class YOU ARE A PART OF has destroyed us in secret while advocating for us in public.
So, no, too vague. Try again. Previous tactics that perhaps had merit in a vacuum or got you a pass publicly just don’t cut it anymore. That’s what the criticism is about but neither will understand or address the root cause because proximity to power is more alluring than justice.

it’s not a society, it’s an annual conference, and invitees aren’t made aware of PT’s involvement (by design, probably) in its founding unless they already had a reference point for it. granted if you’re an accelerationist up thiel’s ass you already probably knew about dialog but if ur a rando culture maker/celeb on the left it’s not likely upon invitation bc the organizers make sure not to invoke him

This makes me wonder if either of them have publicists because a simple “I was not aware of Thiel’s involvement 15 years ago and if he was there at the event I would not have agreed to participate in it” would be a whole hell of a lot better than getting philosophical about being bi-partisan and being in rooms with awful people, from a PR standpoint.

So Im about as left leaning as it comes and I actually think the backlash here is really disheartening. The dominant groupthink is just immediately castigating based on attendance without considering that’s exactly how we end up in such a heated partisan climate.
Yes, the idea of an elite secret society should and does give me major ick. But we ALL should be open to communicating on topics that matter to our future (AI, media, technology, class/wealth distribution) with people who both share and oppose our values. This curiosity allows us to learn, communicate and advocate. I don’t think it suggests anything about the people who attended other than that they have enough influence or money to get a seat at the table.
Hypothetically, for people like Ezra Klein, Sophia bush and JGL who are (in theory) on opposing value spectrums to Peter Thiel, this is exactly the sort of forum that is worthwhile to understand how those positions are formed and argued, and from there to try to influence change aligned with their own perspectives. Why are we hating on the attendees and not the billionaires (again??). My suspicion is that this framing isn’t organic at all but rather stoking the culture wars fire, while deflecting blame to make sure future events are only attended by those who are happy to be labelled alongside the technocrats. This is actually how we LOSE power.
Shutting down all avenues of cross pollination might make us feel righteous but it doesn’t actually contribute anything. In a bizarro world where they invited random social workers with no money and power, I’d like to think I would accept the invitation and take the chance to understand the culture surrounding these powerful people and maybe plant a dissenting seed or two.
While there are some situations where attendance implies endorsing of activities (like joining a Klan meeting), to me this reads like a demonstration of how nuance is lost in soundbite tribalism where we immediately want to satisfy our drive to assign characters to a ‘side’ rather than take time understanding context and intention – in this case an explicitly bipartisan event literally labelled ‘dialogue’.

So like can someone who’s familiar with the conferences in question fill me in on like how legitimate what Sophia is saying here is? Like it’s not like we haven’t known how evil he and his ambitions have been for a long while. Idk maybe she made a bad decision in a stupid bid to reach both sides on a topic important to her? Idk I don’t care about celebrity shit but her advocacy has seemed to be legitimate at least to me from the outside view. Jgl I think is performative and fake from what I’ve seen and don’t really care much about him.
What I’m surprised about most is how few posts I’ve seen talking about fake ass Zionist Cory booker was on that list compared to the celebrity types. In case people didn’t know: there was a Dialog group that went to meet the Pakistani Finance Minister to discuss *AI-monitoring and privatizing state-owned enterprises* among other things.
The group reportedly includes UK House of Lords Member Simon Stevens, Austrian MP Veit Valentin Dengler, Norwegian MP Himanshu Gulati, Jigsaw Chief Executive Officer Yasmin Green, Xbox-Microsoft Vice President Fatima Kardar and others.
So it’s clearly not just an innocent “open debate” between concerned private citizens. They’re pushing for global policy around surveillance and privatization.
