Ben Affleck explains the Sinners deal that made studios mad at Warner Bros

"Ryan did a really smart thing with that deal. There's going to be a reversion, so the movie reverts back to his ownership"

"In 10 years, when they license Sinners again, that's all going back to him. And he bet on himself"

"A lot of people on the studio side were mad at Warner Brothers because it was like, oh, you're giving away this value"

Ben has his flaws, but I could listen to him talk about the film industry all day.

If all industries spoke openly like this – we would see an obvious trend of industries all taking advantage of the up and comers. Giving workers bare minimum to hoard profits happens not just in Hollywood hut our government, tech industry, medical, education, sports….

    3. Tarantino did the same thing with his deals and nobody needs an explainer or an analysis of that. Yet when Coogler did it Variety lost their fucking minds.

    4. With the way some studios act, I always think that they want the studio system again, where they control who the talent works with. It changed for the better.

    5. Quick note, Coogler gets the rights to the film in 25 years not 10 years as Affleck indicates.

That being said, I was so pleased to hear the deal Coogler got with gaining back ownership down the line. I hope more filmmakers get these types of deals as they pour their heart and soul into making them, but have no control in most cases once its released or bought. I know it might be tough moving forward but at least a few filmmakers have started the process. 😊
