Death Wish came about during similar circumstances in 70s New York.
It seems to me that when lawlessness appears to be rampant, like in the example of the gang-rape of the teenager, movies and sentiments like this appear.
The solution is to bring back the rule of law, not censor those who point out its dysfunction.
