Daniel Radcliffe says he dropped out at 17 and Warner Bros paid his old English teacher to talk books with him

"I dropped out of school when I was 17… Emma carried on and did her A-levels"

"Warner Brothers paid for my old English teacher to come in for three hours a week just to talk books"

"no pressure of exams or nothing… that’s the only reason I’ve read chapters of Ulysses, I definitely would never have picked up on my own"

    1. There are a lot of reasons the HP kids turned out to be relatively normal people than other child actors but one of them in large part is Chris Columbus for being a strong anchoring force at the start who cultivated a safe environment for them and ensured they were safe.

    2. One of the things that makes me proud to be British, is our child stars have a much lower rate of, forgive my wording, ‘fucked upness’

Of course there’s always exceptions, but generally speaking ours have relatively normal lives.

Having a teacher who makes you want to read more is a gift. This is such a Daniel Radcliffe story, successful actor, but still excited to talk books with his old teacher.

It should be said that back then core education stopped at 16 with GCSE exams. 6th Form or college for A-Levels or BTECs until 18 were optional. It’s been just over 10 years since it became law to stay in education or an apprenticeship until 18.
