I know nothing about them, but that’s a very very good thing to do. Quarter of a million people will be positively impacted by this, that’s a ton

This seems like a good move. As a Canadian, I find it unfathomable that a person goes in debt with medical costs but that doesn’t render this any less good.

      Maybe I’m a cynic but……what’s the catch

That’s awesome! Hopefully they both support politicians who are in favor of Medicare for all, and taxing the rich so that way they don’t have to be directly responsible for paying off medical debt in the future – their taxes can help pay for people to get medical care for folks without the threat of debt. šŸ™‚

Evan Spiegel, Snapchat’s CEO, was alleged to have said:
ā€œThis app is only for rich people. I don’t want to expand into poor countries like India and Spain.ā€

How are we sure they’re not getting a tax cut out of this? We should never glorify billionaires for the pennies they hand out to the masses while literally killing the planet.

    6. I don’t pretend to know all the ins & outs of Snapchat but my friend interned there. He loved the environment. He specifically thought they took mental health seriously if you worked there.

Using other billionaires tax write off donations for a good cause is pretty sweet .. but you know what would be even cooler?

The taxes we pay to go towards our healthcare instead of a trillion dollar military that keeps our sick and stupid population safe.

    8. Not where I thought that was going when you see “Snapchat CEO and former Victoria’s Secret model” show up in a headline. Good PR for them but it is still a net benefit for folks within the system we live in.

    9. Yay my app that advertises to kids made me enough money to allow me to cancel medical debt for people when medical debt shouldn’t even be a thing.

This gives him a tax break and helps launder his image after all the layoffs they have been doing at Snap.

      Stop praising rich people please.

Fine ig I won’t delete Snapchat even though I haven’t opened it in years 😭

    11. Damn, now imagine the good that could be done with say… 1.4 trillion dollars.

    12. Life-Assistant-4737 on

His net worth is only $1-2 billion, so I wonder how he is able to afford this.

    13. How every rich person doesn’t just walk around doing this shit for fun boggles my mind. Billionaires shouldn’t exist, but if they do, just do shit like this please.

    14. Meanwhile in other places of the world people have free healthcare. I’m not saying this is not awesome, because it is, I’m saying there’s something wrong with society when you basically can go bankrupt if you get sick, while the rich hardly pay any tax.

That’s great, now about spending an equal amount getting candidates elected who support Medicare for all?

    16. No-Effective388 on

I’m happy with this idea. It’s a good thing to help people with medical debts.

    17. Glad_Pea_4871 on

this is nice but im feeling sus. what did they do in secret that requires this kind of PR??

or is this snapchat trying to be cool again

    18. Guys. Snapchat is such a predatory app, this doesn’t make these good people 😢 this is less than the bare minimum they should be ā€œgiving backā€ after all BS they allow & support on their app. I get this is a good thing but again, we should demand and except so much more šŸ˜®ā€šŸ’ØšŸ«©šŸ«©šŸ«©šŸ«©

I am willing to allow celebrities to compete for public favor via the amount of not rich people’s debt they pay offĀ

      Tax billionaires out of existence.

Medical care is a basic human right.

Being a billionaire is a major human blight.

    21. punk-recluse-2834 on

Per video: ā€œIf you happen to receive a letter in the mail, letting you know your medical debt has been forgiven, we want you to know, it’s real.ā€

Very cool of them, but curious. Were people notified about this beforehand? How are they able to erase a person’s medical debt seemingly without them knowing anything about it? Anyone know?

    22. This is probably only costing them about $5.5 million, or about 0.2% of their net worth.

Source: Medical debt is bought for pennies on the dollar, and Undue says a $10 donation can forgive $1,000 in debt. Forbes estimates Spiegel is worth $2.5 billion.

    23. Could you imagine how different the world would look today if the tech Bros decided to be heroes like these two instead of being zeros like they are??

    24. ted_cruzs_micr0pen15 on

They could’ve used that money to lobby for socialized healthcare.

    25. Had to push those stupid pictures of him in the fuckass Snapchat glasses lower in the search results

    26. tacomamajama on

Capitalist billionaires deep in PR mode but it benefits the people so I’m here for it. Did you see those janky glasses Snap is launching?

    27. That’s great and all but does nothing to solve the root problem. It accomplishes nothing in the long term.

    28. Daisydoolittle on

I’ve heard Miranda on a few podcasts and she seems like such a sweet, caring, real person. I’m so happy she’s using her money for good. I wish other rich people would rich right.
